A 1-1 draw at Anfield might have been regarded as a decent result in the greater scheme of things, but with the title chase running into the last seven games, a feisty performance by what has been a disappointing Liverpool side this season left Spurs dropping two points ahead of Southampton's visit to Leicester City tomorrow afternoon. 
While it wasn't quite a Classico, the game provided enough moments of excitement to entertain the neutrals, for us Spurs fans, there was not the outcome that was required to keep the pressure on Leicester City at the very top of the table.

Liverpool had the better of the first half, while Spurs had the upper hand in the second, so, perhaps a draw was the fairest outcome, but with the need to win all our remaining games, hoping the Foxes slip up, two lost points may prove vital in the final league table.

Kicking off, Liverpool wanted to start the game on the attack, but Tottenham passed the ball well to keep them at bay. A third minute free kick dropped to Coutinho, but Kane was back to defend it by blocking his effort and it was Spurs who had the first meaningful shot five minutes later. Walker came in from the right to feed Eriksen just inside the area and he hit his shot early, forcing Mingolet to parry the ball away unconvincingly.

12 minutes in, Lallana won possession and played in Coutinho, but Kevin Wimmer was in the way, but the Liverpool midfielder had a second chance, but Hugo got down to his left to palm the low drive away.  Spurs were one pass away from getting through a couple of times, but interceptions or over-hit passes prevented that, but Liverpool were finding their final pass better, allowing space on the wings, which Moreno exploited, putting a low cross in from the left.  Son slid in to cut it out before it got to the centre of the penalty area, but in doing so, he pushed the ball towards goal, forcing Hugo to once more dive to push the ball wide, this time to his right at the foot of the post.  Just before that Kane had capitalised on hesitancy between Lovren and Mingolet, when the defender left the ball for the keeper and he only just got to the bal before Harry, but the forward blocked the clearance and Liverpool were happy to see the ball drop wide of the empty goal.

The Brazilian Coutinho left the crowd talking about one aspect of his game that tends to distract from the good play he exhibits.  His theatrical dive as Alderweireld came in to tackle him was shockingly bad and the yelp he let out eve more so.  Luckily, referee Moss was on the spot to see the simulation for what it was and book the Liverpool number 10.  Toby was furious and with good reason, as this aspect of the game is something that does not reflect well on anyone who throws themselves about to get free-kicks or opponents booked.

With both sides pressing the opposition on the ball, there was little time available to do much with it and when Dele Alli nicked it off Sakho, he released Harry Kane to his right and moving into the box, he struck a shot intended for  a spot inside the far post, but it drifted wide.  Alli had continued his run and was disappointed not to be picked out ghosting in at the back stick.  Kyle Walker, who had been looking to get forward at every opportunity, produced a fine tackle in his own area to prevent Coutinho getting a shot away and he even managed to win a goal kick from the challenge.

Ten minutes before the break, Liverpool were putting pressure on the Spurs goal, with Sturridge sent through into the area with only Lloris to beat, but his shot was blocked by the French keeper's legs and then Lallana made himself space to shot down to Hugo's left and once more, the goalie pushed the ball wide.  His best save was yet to come, as the ball bobbled about the box following a corner, with Lallana hitting a shot into the ground from a few yards out into the ground and as it bounced up, Lloris - already into his dive - reached up to swat the ball away with his right hand.  That had followed Harry robbing Sakho of the ball and heading for goal, but he was denied a shot by Lovren's sliding challenge, with Dele Alli up in a good position square of him.  The half ended with Alli trying a shot that bounced just in front of Mingloet from 30 yards, but it wasn't too difficult a stop.

At the start of the second half, Spurs were looking to move the ball into Liverpool's back third, but they were crowded out, but they only had Alli's attempt at a back header from the penalty spot that did not trouble Mingolet to show for it.  Then Liverpool scored.  They got the run of the bal in midfield on their right and the ball went infield.  It was played left and Coutinho exchanged passes with Sturridge and found himself just inside the box, from where he steered a shot past Lloris on the left to give the home side the lead. 

How Spurs would respond could shape their season and Alli almost got them back into the game with a shot that deflected high into the air and looped over the Liverpool bar.  The same end result came when Sturridge lost Wimmer to head Coutinho's cross at goal, but it went too high as he stretched for it.  Spurs stepped up a gear and when Dier floated a perfect diagonal ball to the right, Son came onto it and his volley just went wide of Mingolet's right hand post.  However, a minute later, Kane had Spurs on level terms, with the goal down to Eriksen's persistence.  A long ball to the left looked to be running out and Can gave it up, but Christian didn't  and with one tough to keep it in and then a flick of his right foot, the bal went into the penalty area for Kane to allow it to run across him, taking Lovren out of the game in the process.  with one touch, his next was a quick shot that went across the keeper and in off the far post to make it 1-1.  It was a neat piece of forward play by Kane that showed he is developing as well as becoming a deadly marksman.

There was just over a half hour left and Spurs were going for it.  Eriksen tested Mingolet from outside the box with a shot that the keeper had to dive left to push away, but they had to be on their toes, as a Liverpool break won a corner.  From it, Henderson hit a volley at goal that was blocked and it went out to Coutinho on the left, who was unlucky to fire a shot across the goal-line, with no colleague there to finish it.  Tottenham were also dangerous on the break and when Dembele headed out a Liverpool corner, Eriksen took the ball on forty yards, before hitting a cross-field ball to Chadli, but, on his own, he held the ball and was then tackled for the ball to go out for a corner.  Christian almost picked out Dele's run into the area, but the ball was a bit too high for him to chest down and it came off his face and ran through to the keeper.

Substitute Origi tried to catch Lloris out at his near post without luck and Coutinho went close with a placed shot from the edge of the box when found by Origi, but his shot went a foot wide of Lloris' right hand post with the keeper unable to react to it.  Hugo was able to get behind a straightforward shot form Henderson form outside the box and then Eric Dier tried a long range drive, but it was blocked by Moreno.  Spurs kept pushing for the winner and Eriksen once more forced Mingolet to dive to his left with a curling effort down to the keeper's left that would have crept inside the post.  From the corner, Toby Alderweireld met it too well and the ball went straight and a yard wide of the goal, where a glancing header may have tested the goalkeeper.

And that was the last meaningful effort of the game.  It had been a tough contest, with Jurgen Klopp getting his team up for it, as teams will between now and the end of the season, so Tottenham will have to be ready for that.  It wasn't a bad performance by Spurs today, but Liverpool played better than they have done this season in both games against us.  The game was exciting, with it ebbing and flowing in either direction and with goal-scoring opportunities aplenty, but the final result leaves Spurs dependent on Leicester dropping points to have any hope of taking top spot off them.  And then, we have to win all our remaining matches.

As things stand, it looks like we won't make the top spot, with tough games ahead, with Leicester having an easier run-in, but it has been a magnificent season and there is still some more to come.
