HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF OUR READERS FROM ALL AT MEHSTG.

Friday   24.12.2004   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Ledley King has given Spurs fans some Christmas fear by saying that he will only stay at Spurs as long as they are making progress in the right direction and challenging for trophies in an interview in the Daily Mail.  The central defender said he would reconsider his future if the club started to falter and that he was proud to be mentioned in rumours linking him with Arsenal.  King went on to add that he felt that he could achieve all that he wanted with Tottenham, but his agent claimed he should receive a huge raise from his current £12,500 a week.  Jonathan Barnett was reported as saying that Tottenham would have to break the bank for his next contract to put his client in the same pay league as Rio Ferdinand and John Terry.
In contrast, Ananova carries a story stating that King has said that Martin Jol is having a dramatic effect on the team.
"He is passionate about his football and wants to be a winner. He is trying to get that across to the players and it is great," said King. "I think it is what we needed, someone to push us on as we've got a lot of young players. We need to get used to being in winning ways and become winners.  Over the last few years the club has had to put up with the mediocre, winning a couple of games then losing. We need to get the right mentality to win games regularly and that is what we've started doing."  The Spurs defender went on to say that the confidence is spreading through the side and that "everyone is enjoying life at the moment. When you are winning and playing well you enjoy it and are happy about everything - that is how it is now."
On the Spurs site today, Ledley states his shock at the above story, saying "I was amazed to read that article because it is just not true.  Tottenham will always be my first love and I am very happy here.  I only signed a new contract in the summer and am not interested in going anywhere else.

Following yesterday's Daily Mail story of David Sullivan being tired of travelling up to Birmingham from his Essex home and wanting to buy a club nearer there, either Tottenham or West Ham United, comes news of another takeover in the offing.  A consortium of millionaires have made £55 million and £65 million bids to buy Spurs from Daniel Levy.  These people believe that the club is a viable operation and Levy is said to have put a sale price of £90 million on THFC.  A spokesman for the group - Mr. G. Hoddle, who is also working currently as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers - said, these people believe that Joe Lewis is ready to sell up and is giving Daniel Levy one more chance to get things right, but if the pressure gets too much, they think Levy will walk away.  The consortium believe that the club is being run in an amateur fashion and that it is ridiculous that the manager has to go through five people to buy a player.  Mr. Hoddle added that if the consortium does take over he hoped they would say "Glenn, you run the football side.  You work hand in hand with the chief executive and you have three or four people full-time on the scouting side."
Tottenham's PR company have hit back saying that this is nonsense and they felt that it was being put around by someone hoping to embarrass Mr. Hoddle.  The statement on the club's website said that the club was not up for sale and that it did not want fans to believe this type of rumour, but Daniel Levy had a tetchy tone to the comments attributed to him.
Hoddle was a guest on Sky Sports this afternoon and was quoted as saying
"I can assure you I have never sat down with any consortium.  I don't know where it comes from but I am delighted to be Wolves manager. My first weekend back and there's a story I scratch my head about but it is great to be back in football."
It seems he is still scratching his head about things !!.
Wolverhampton Wanderers also issued a statement through their Chief Executive Jez Moxey saying Glenn Hoddle had not spoken to the reporter and that the manager and club were committed to each other, so there could not be a parting of ways.
The Sunday People seem to have it in for Spurs at the moment, as they also reckon that Spurs would be ready to sell Ledley King, Robbie Keane, Freddy Kanoute, Simon Davies, Jamie Redknapp and Michael Brown if they receive the right offer for the players.
This is a line also followed by the Mail on Sunday, who also say there will be an exodus in January, but claim that the club has signed Auxerre's Finland midfielder Teemu Tainio on a free transfer.
Jermain Defoe's future at Tottenham has been doubted by the News of the World, who claim that his contract talks have hit deadlock and Arsenal and Chelsea might nip in to sign up the England striker.
The Sunday Mirror thinks that Jamie Redknapp will be used in a part-exchange deal with Fulham to bring Steed Malbranque to White Hart Lane.  The Cottagers seem to be open to offers for the French midfielder with an asking price of about £6million being mooted.
