SPURS TEAM NEWS : - Steffen Freund has been added to the Tottenham squad for tomorrow's Worthington Cup tie against Cardiff City.  It will be his first inclusion in a Spurs squad since the start of the year when he was injured in the semi-final first leg of the same competition.  Christian Ziege will be out for the game and also misses Germany's internationals against the Faroe Islands and Bosnia next week.  Rohan Ricketts, Jonathan Blondel and Ronnie Henry are also in the squad.  Milenko Acimovic should be available after getting a kick on the ankle on Saturday.
Glenn Hoddle has said that the Spurs fans were right to boo the team at half-time, as the performance deserved it.

Sunday  29.9.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Glenn Hoddle says that because Kasey Keller is touch and go for the Cardiff City Worthington Cup tie, he might have to seek exceptional permission from the Premier League to bring in another goalkeeper.  Lars Hirschfeld is the only fit goalie in the first team squad at the club at the moment and Hoddle could try and bring another glove-man in on a short term deal to cover for Keller's injury.
Hoddle also told the Spurs website that Christian Ziege has strained his calf muscle (or will that turn out to be a strained back ?) and that Milenko Acimovic and Jamie Redknapp both took knocks which make them unlikely to pay against Cardiff City.  The side could have some of the younger players at the club drafted in with about 15 players likely to be unavailable for the match.

Glenn Hoddle said that Tottenham had the option to sign Italian striker Massimo Maccarone in the summer, but at the time, the funds were not available to bring him to White Hart Lane.  Instead Middlesbrough paid £2.15 million more to sign him from Empoli.
Fernando Morientes has revealed on the Ananova news website that he was flattered and has been looking out for the club's results.  He said he was pleased that they are having a good start to the season, but this did not mean he would be joining Spurs in January.

The Israel FA are to approach UEFA about playing their club European games and their national side's Euro 2004 qualifying matches at White hart Lane.  At the moment, they are not allowed to play in their homeland, because of the sensitive political situation there and are playing games in Cyprus, with Hungary, Ukraine and Romania also considered as possible venues.  With Cyprus in their Euro qualifying group they would not want to hand home advantage to that country by having to stage their home games there.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he thinks it is a good thing that Tottenham are returning to good form, as it will be good for North London football.  The Frenchman added that much of the difference in the step-up this season is attributable to Jamie Redknapp, who has a "terrible habit ... of passing to his own team" ??
Both Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand were today linked with loan moves to Portsmouth according to the London Evening Standard.
John Piercy has signed for Brighton and Hove Albion and revealed that he turned down the offer of a one year deal to stay at Tottenham.  The Spurs midfielder has been on trial at the South Coast club for four weeks and goes straight in to the squad for the Seagulls match against Rotherham United.

ENIC are to sell their share holdings in other European football clubs to concentrate on Tottenham Hotspur.  This means they will relinquish their shares in Italy's Vicenza, FC Basel of Switzerland, Czech club Slavia Prague, Greek side AEK Athens and Glasgow Rangers.  After the TV deal was struck for European competitions yesterday, the ruling that any club under the ownership of a party with a financial interest in another club in the competition would require one to drop out.  ENIC had tried to get this UEFA ruling over-turned previously, but were unsuccessful, so have decided to put all the eggs in the Tottenham basket and hope that the cockerel will lay them a Golden Egg.  While the TeamTalk report claims that this might make more transfer funds available for Glenn Hoddle, this will remain to be seen.

Fernando Morientes has stayed at Real Madrid despite the signing of Ronaldo.  He turned down Tottenham and Barcelona to remain on the books at the Bernabeu.
Christian Ziege missed yesterday's win over Southampton as he returned to Munich to comfort his father after the death of his mother.  He may be away from the club for a while and has pulled out of the Germany squad to face Lithuania in a Euro 2004 qualifier on Saturday. Our condolences go out to Christian.
