Transfer deadline day is here, so these are the moved affecting
Tottenham Hotspur.
Young reserve defender Rodrigo Defendi has joined AS Roma on
a season long loan and his move can be made permanent if Roma wish
as long as they pay a fee of £17,000 before 30th April 2007.
Winger Wayne Routledge has joined Fulham on a season long
loan.
Making the opposite journey, midfielder Steed Malbranque has
joined Tottenham for an undisclosed fee, but this is believed to be
around £2.5 million.
Wigan Athletic were said to have accepted the "biggest transfer fee
ever" to allow defender Pascal Chimbonda to join Tottenham.
Those who got away ... rumours of Julio Baptista coming to
Spurs proved false, as he featured in a deal to take Jose Reyes to
Real Madrid while Baptista went to Arsenal, with both moves being
for the rest of the season on loan, but with the possibility of
becoming permanent at some stage in the future. Another player
linked with Tottenham was Juan Pablo Sorin of Villareal, who
joined Hamburg.
The rumours leading up to the transfer activity saw the Daily Mirror
claim that Martin Jol would make one last effort to sign Stewart
Downing (with the Daily Mail saying that Boro would let him go
if Spurs paid 60% of the rumoured £10 million fee up front), but if
not Tottenham would switch their attention to Olympique Lyonnais
winger
Hatem Ben Arfa. The Independent had Aston Villa down as
being favourites to sign Jermain Defoe for £9 million and
Harry Kewell's agent said there had been no talk about him leaving
Anfield, let alone any club coming in for him.
Young-Pyo Lee has returned to South Korea to prepare for the
match in the Asian Cup against Iran on Saturday and has said his
decision to turn down a move to AS Roma had nothing to do with his
Christian beliefs..

As the transfer window starts to close the frenzy of speculation
heats up. Aston Villa are linked with a £9 million chase for
forward
Jermain Defoe in the Daily Mirror and both the Sun and the
Daily Express reckon Tottenham are said to be lining up moves for
Steed Malbranque
from Fulham for £2.5 million (with TeamTalk reporting that Wayne
Routledge might move top Craven Cottage as part of the deal) and
a £5.25 million transfer of Wigan Athletic defender Pascal
Chimbonda.
In Malbranque's case, he was set to join West Ham United, but instead
of having a medical with the East London club, he has chosen to have
one with Spurs (strange as the hospital part of the medical is done
at the same location !!), as they are his preferred club of choice.
Chimbonda's transfer will probably see a payment of £3.25
million, with the rest related to appearances. The Daily Star
go down a different avenue with a claim that having missed out on
Stewart Downing, Tottenham will make a late bid for Liverpool's
Dutch left winger
Boudewijn Zenden. Young-Pyo Lee's proposed move to AS
Roma collapsed for personal reasons and he will stay at White Hart
Lane now. Tottenham refused to comment on the matter according
to Football 365. Early copies of the Sun reckon Spurs will
offer £5 million for Australia and Liverpool left midfielder
Harry Kewell
and that the deal for Pascal Chimbonda will be sewn up for
£5.25 million.
The England Under-19 squad to play Holland at Walsall on Tuesday 5th
September contains three Spurs Academy players - goalkeeper David
Button and defenders Leigh Mills and Chris Riley.
The reserves were away to Portsmouth tonight in their first league

giving them a 1-0 victory.

Rumours that Spurs are close to signing Mido on a permanent
basis are all over the news today after Hassam Shehata, the Egyptian
coach, said that the AS Roma striker would be joining up with his
national squad tomorrow after having a medical in London before
signing a deal. The Daily Mirror claim that the striker has
lost two stones over the summer, which has re-ignited Tottenham's
interest in the forward. Roma would not sanction another
loan deal and therefore, only a suggested £4 million transfer (or £5
million in the Daily Star) would be acceptable to them and Spurs
announced that he would be returning to White Hart Lane subject to
receiving his work permit.
While the Sun run this story, they also claim that Tottenham have
increased their bid for Real Madrid's Julio Baptista to £13.5
million. News from Italy is that AS Roma are keen on defender
Young-Pyo Lee, whose agent reckons the deal is almost sealed.
The Italian club came in for Lee in January, but the transfer was
not completed, but now he could be used as a part of the deal to
bring
Mido to Spurs. Other stories link Spurs with a move for
Fulham's Steed Malbranque for the left side of midfield,
after Middlesbrough turned down Tottenham's latest bid for
Stewart Downing and said the winger was happy to stay at the
Riverside stadium. The Times reckon that West Ham United are
still favourites to sign Malbranque, as Spurs have not met the
asking price nor agreed to the player's terms.
The Daily Express claim that after the Everton game there was a
dressing room row between Didier Zokora and Edgar Davids.

According to the Daily Star Middlesbrough have put an £18 million

Tottenham's interest in the winger. The Daily Mirror claims

Mido returning to Tottenham, but add Newcastle United into the
equation, with both clubs vying to bring the AS Roma striker in on

With Tottenham having made a further bid (believed to be £8 million
rising to £10 million depending on appearances, although it is only
the press who think it is £10 million) for Middlesbrough winger
Stewart Downing, the News of the World claim the player is to
seek "showdown" talks with his club about the situation. Spurs
are said to be shocked by Middlesbrough's response and will not be
pursuing the player beyond this bid.
Paul Robinson has said that Spurs should not be selling their best
players to their Premier League rivals in a News of the World
interview. Referring to Michael Carrick's sale to Manchester
United, he understood it meant good business for the club, but felt
that Spurs should be hanging onto their top stars. He also
said that coming to White Hart Lane gave him a new challenge as
things were expected from him and he has made the England goalkeeper
spot his own, something he wants to do for the next 15 years.
Robbo told the paper that the team were decimated before the final

The Daily Mail run a story saying that Atletico Madrid's Bulgarian
winger Martin Petrov will join Spurs next week, while the
Independent appear to indicate that Spurs will be signing
Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing as it states the club
are "confident" of finally getting the left winger for a fee of £8
million. I am not sure he is worth that much, but better we

Edgar Davids will spend another season at Spurs after he turned

mind-set in the team..
Various sources have reported that Tottenham are set to turn their
attention away from right-back Pascal Chimbonda, as they are
not willing to meet the asking price of £6 million that Wigan Athletic
are asking. Still in the same area, Spurs' interest in Blackburn
Rover's Australian right-back Lucas Neill might not come to
fruition, as Rovers are unwilling to sell him to Tottenham, even if he
fails to enter into contract negotiations with only a year to run on
his current deal and they have to let him go on a free transfer next
year. Spurs are linked on the Sky Sports website with an
interest in Deportivo La Coruna's Argentinian midfielder Aldo
Ducsher. The 27 year old looks certain to leave La Raizor

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewel has told the media that he had
turned down a £3.5 million plus players (believed to be Andy Reid
and Danny Murphy) offer from Tottenham for defender Pascal
Chimbonda the Times reports, stating he would only accept a £5.5
million cash offer according to the Guardian or £6 million in the
Manchester Evening News, which may move Spurs to look elsewhere.
However, the player's representative, Roger Boli, said that he has
come to England to finalise the move to White Hart Lane in the next
few days. As an option to signing Chimbonda, Spurs are once more
linked with Blackburn Rovers' Australian right back Lucas Neill,
the Daily Mirror reckons. The Sun claim that Tottenham are ready
to pay Chelsea's £4 million price tag on left back Wayne Bridge.
Didier Zokora has told the media that he turned down a move to
Arsenal as he really wanted to join Tottenham, where he believes the
club has a side for the future. The Ivory Coast international
said that he was impressed by Damien Comolli, who signed him for St.
Etienne from Belgian side Genk, who sold him the ambition of the club,
where he acknowledged that players like Aaron Lennon are the
future of English football.
Dimitar Berbatov said today that he is feeling comfortable in
the Spurs side and is looking forward to scoring the goals that will
help the team enter the Champions League. Martin Jol revealed
that the Bulgarian had been playing as part of a three man attack, but
this was only because Jermaine Jenas had just returned to
training and Aaron Lennon is also not fully match fit.
When they are both ready to play, Jol said the team would play a
different formation.
Harry Redknapp has congratulated Daniel Levy on signing
Michael Carrick from West Ham United for £2.5 million. The
Portsmouth manager said he nearly signed him again for his current
club, but Arsenal came in, dithered and Tottenham took the plunge,
with the chairman being the one who brought him in rather than
Jacques Santini, who did not know about Carrick. Redknapp
said that Levy was the reason Spurs were now reaping £16 million
profit, but cheekily suggested he should be hired at White Hart Lane
as Chief Scout !!
Adam Smith came on as a 62nd minute substitute in England
Under-17s 1-0 win over Faroe Islands U19s. Kyle Fraser-Allen
was an unused substitute.
