White Hot Lines

AUGUST 2002

Saturday  31.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Tottenham beat SCBC this afternoon 2-1 at White Hart Lane to go top of the Premier League.  Les Ferdinand and a last minute penalty by Teddy Sheringham saw Spurs take the three points against the gallant strugglers from the foot of the table.  For a match report, click here.  For reaction, click here.
Just to round off a very good day for Tottenham, Robbie Keane has joined the club from Leeds United for £7 million.  He has signed a four year deal, with the option of another two, that will install him as a crowd favourite.  The Republic of Ireland international told reporters that he was swayed in coming to White hart Lane by Glenn Hoddle's view of the future of the club, which Keane thought he wanted to be a part of.  Keane will wear the number 22 shirt this season.
Glenn Hoddle said he lied to the media about his interest in Robbie Keane to shake them off the scent as he pursued his target.
It turned out that Real Madrid were using Spurs as a way of increasing the price of Fernando Morientes, who eventually joined Internazionale of Milan, as part of the deal that took Ronaldo to Real Madrid.
It was being rumoured today that the deal Bolton Wanderers wanted for Michael Ricketts involved Gary Doherty going the other way and this was unacceptable to Tottenham.
Former Spurs winger Garry Brady has signed for Dundee after being released by Portsmouth some time ago.
One of the many targets Spurs have been linked with, Uruguayan striker Walter Pandiani, has moved from Deportivo La Coruna to Real Mallorca.  Another, Albert Luque made the journey in the opposite direction.

Friday  30.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

A fee for striker Robbie Keane has been agreed with Leeds United, believed to be £7 million.  The Irish international is having a medical and talks with the club today and will be signed if everything goes well.
In a busy day's deadline trading, Oyvind Leonhardsen joined Aston Villa on a free transfer.  According to the Guardian recently, he was earning £40,000 a week, which can now be used for someone in a  position we need players.  I bet he has had to take a cut to go to Villa !!  He told a Norwegian newspaper that he hoped things would be better for him at Villa Park, as the situation at Spurs was totally "hopeless".
Tottenham were supposedly battling with Liverpool to sign 22 year old central defender Chris Riggott.  although the youngster is one of Derby County's crown jewels, the financial situation at the club has deemed it necessary to sell some off to stay afloat.  A fee of £7 million was being quoted in reports this morning.
On top of that, Tottenham were also keeping Derby County striker Malcolm Christie in their sights, in case one of their other targets failed to sign.
Planet Football reckon that the Morientes deal will fall down on personal terms, as the Spanish international does not want to take a drop in salary.  However, it reports that Real Madrid have agreed a £3 million for five years deal to pay for the striker.  However, it is also reported elsewhere that Real need the money to fund their purchase of Ronaldo, although Morientes might be going to Milan as part of that deal.  Oh, this is oh, so confusing !!
Ken Bates is sounding of again (so, what's new there then ?).  This time he says that he had already received a bid of £13 million for Eidur Gudjohnsen and then Tottenham offered £8 million, which he found was a waste of his time.  At the time of going to press, Chelsea had sold no players and their financial situation is no better than it was yesterday.  The Spurs website admits they made an enquiry about the asking prices of Gudjohnsen and Hasselbaink, but did not make an offer after that initial contact.
He's been joined in the "Let's slag of Tottenham day" by bottom of the league Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce.  He has slammed Spurs for their conducting of transfer dealings and rumours concerning Michael Ricketts.  He said they never came near the asking price and would have paid £7 million if they were serious, as they had shelled that out for Robbie Keane.  He also complained about the players that Tottenham were offering in part exchange and said they were of no use to his squad.  Look out people, we have another Big Club in the Premiership !!  The club have issued a statement on their website to say they were approached by Ricketts' agent and that the chairmen of both clubs can confirm that no offer was made.
It was reveled in the London Evening Standard that the reason Enrico Chiesa did not join Spurs was that he did not want to come to London to play in some practice matches arranged to allow the club to assess his fitness.  A player of his standing probably thought he was above this, but surely Spurs did the right thing, as he has missed the majority of the last two seasons out injured and this would have been a useful test to see how he stood up to the English style of play.
SPURS TEAM NEWS : - Anthony Gardner will shake off a minor strain for the match tomorrow and Steffen Iversen might come straight into the team after returning to England.
SCBC TEAM NEWS : - Paul Jones is likely to be preferred in goal, while Tahar El-Khalej is free to play after serving a suspension of three games carried over from the end of last season.
A former transfer target of Tottenham's - Ivan De La Pena - has joined Espanyol in Spain.
A former transfer target of Tottenham's - Johan Micoud - has joined Werder Bremen in Germany from Italy's Parma.
A former transfer target of Tottenham's - Tore Andre Flo - has joined Sunderland from Glasgow Rangers.

Thursday  29.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Chelsea have told Spurs that Eidur Gudjohnsen will not be joining them.  A preliminary inquiry was made by Tottenham, but a figure that Spurs would not pay was mentioned and the matter was left there.
The Guardian report that Robbie Keane will join Spurs with Darren Anderton and some money going to Yorkshire in return.  Leeds United are holding out for £5 million, while Tottenham have offered £4 million.  Leeds' position might change if they throw in Mauricio Taricco as part of the deal.  Apart from this item on Soccernet, nothing to confirm this has come out today.  Keane has turned down the opportunity to speak to Sunderland again, just before the two teams met on Wednesday and Spurs look like his only option out of Elland Road, should a deal be agreed.
The London Evening Standard have cast doubt on Tottenham's ability to bring a new striker to the club (what a surprise as they never miss a chance to bash Spurs), saying that Daniel Levy has informed Hoddle that any deal must involve a small down-payment and the rest in instalments.  This would effectively rule out a move for an English player, because the story says that Premier League rules insist that all monies are paid within 12 months.
One striker who is being touted to Tottenham (and Fulham) is Palma's Turkish forward Hakan Sukur.  The 31 year old is keen to come and play in England.
The signing of Hernan Crespo and/or Fernando Morientes are being held up by problems at Lazio.  UEFA have put a transfer embargo on them as they still owe a large amount of the fee due to Manchester United for Jaap Stam.  This means that no-one can leave the club, until it is settled.  This has a knock on effect as Morientes was one of the makeweights in the proposed purchase of Ronaldo by Real Madrid from Internazionale.  Crespo was one of the replacements Real had lined up if Morientes went.   With both deals up in the air, Tottenham are left stranded until something is sorted out at Lazio.
The Real Madrid Director of Football, Jorge Valdano, has confirmed that Spurs have made a fresh bid for Morientes ahead of the transfer deadline.  However, the two clubs are about £4 million apart in their valuation of the striker.
Matthew Etherington has said on TeamTalk that he will stay at Tottenham while he is still involved in the first team.  Ooooooh, that's big of him.
SPURS TEAM NEWS : -  It is likely to be an unchanged team that faces SCBC on Saturday.  Other fitness news is that Darren Anderton is nearly right after his knee injury, Stephen Carr is running in training and might play before the end of September and Steffen Freund is back in training too, having played an hour of a practice match at the training ground against Fulham.  Steffen Iversen has returned to London now his brother is recovering well from his car crash in Norway.  He has an outside chance of being in the starting line-up in place of Gary Doherty.
Johnnie Jackson has joined Swindon Town for a three month loan period.  This will give him the opportunity to get first team League experience.
Apparently, Chris Armstrong has signed for Bolton Wanderers for a weekly salary of £1,000 a week until he proves his fitness to play in the side.  When he does so, he will have bonuses linked to games played and performance.
Gary Doherty has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad to play Russia in a Euro 2004 qualifier on September 7th.
Former Spurs defender Guy Butters has moved from Gillingham to Brighton and Hove Albion on a free transfer.

Wednesday  28.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

In the best TV cop drama tradition, Peter Ridsdale, Terry Venables and Leeds United have given Tottenham "just 24 hours more" to sign Robbie Keane.  They require the time and the money to do their own deal before the deadline falls.  It is reported that the Irish international could be available for as little as £5 million now.  A bargain, I think you will agree.  However, the player has denied that there have been any talks between him and Spurs.
Manchester United are said by the Daily Star to be ready to enter the race to sign Eidur Gudjohnsen from Chelsea.  It is believed that the Old Trafford side are set to offer £7 million for the Icelandic striker.
The story of Fernando Morientes continues, with the Guardian saying that Real Madrid are ready to jettison the striker, as they believe he has not got the commitment to the club that they think he should have.  £14 million has been quoted as an acceptable fee, but the player will want £50,000 a week, despite Gus Poyet's cajoling and will also demand the number 9 shirt.  Look out Les.  Let's hope he doesn't have to arm wrestle you for it !!
Spurs have been refused a work permit for Chinese international forward Bo Qu.  "Kevin", as he likes to be known, has not played 75% of his country's international matches over the last two years, mainly because he has only recently broken into the side as a youngster. Tottenham have requested an early appeal hearing, according to the official website, because of the impending transfer deadline.
Chris Armstrong has signed for Bolton Wanderers after being released by Tottenham at the end of last season.
Tottenham could make at least one signing before the deadline on Saturday, but it will be a keeper and not a striker !!  Russ Howarth, on trial from York City, is likely to be brought in as cover for the goalkeeping position, with Neil Sullivan out for at least two months.  The 20 year old has believed to have impressed in his short spell in training at Spurs.
Jason Koumas of Tranmere Rovers, who had previously been linked with a move to Tottenham, has agreed to join West Bromwich Albion.
Former Spurs manager Christian Gross steered his FC Basle side to an away goals win over Celtic in the Champions League qualifier tonight.
Former Spurs defender Mark Bowen is being asked to choose between being Birmingham City assistant manager and the same part-time position for Wales.  His club manager Steve Bruce said he cannot afford to lose him for long periods with his national side.

Tuesday  27.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Spurs beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 tonight at the Valley.  Simon Davies' early goal was the winner for Tottenham.  For a match report, click here and for reaction, click here.
Spurs are supposed to have set up a deal to sign Hernan Crespo from Lazio with Sergei Rebrov moving to Rome in part exchange, but the transfer fell through.  Now Spurs are said to be taking Crespo on loan for a year with a view to a permanent deal after that should they so desire.  His wages of £4 million a year might be somewhat of a drawback to the deal going through though.
A £10 million offer for Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen is also rumoured to be on the cards as Tottenham seek a striking option.  Although the player is said to be happy at Stamford Bridge, he might be sold on, should Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's move to Barcelona fall through.
Conflicting reports have been made about the future of Fernando Morientes of Real Madrid.  One says that he has had a stand up row with Jorge Valdano (the Director of Football), while the other has it that Morientes' agent tells that no offer has been made for his client and that includes Tottenham.
Matthew Etherington reckons he will have to play 25 games this season or he will have to leave Spurs to get enough first team experience to satisfy him.
Portsmouth are continuing to try and get a deal for Tim Sherwood, but with Tottenham asking £250,000 and Sherwood asking for the same amount as a settlement before he leaves, the process seems to have hit a stalemate.

Monday  26.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Neil Sullivan has been ruled out for about eight weeks after breaking his thumb in training.  He has had his hand put in plaster and will be replaced on the bench by Canadian Lars Hirschfeld.
Darren Anderton is hoping to be fit to travel to South London for the game against Charlton Athletic tomorrow.
Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen is the latest Tottenham target as they seek to find a striker before the deadline on Saturday.

Sunday  25.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Tottenham have supposedly offered £11.5 million for Fernando Morientes and Real Madrid have said they want £16 million for the Spanish international striker.
Meanwhile, the News of the World carries a report that Robbie Keane has told Leeds United that they must play him or let him go.  The Irish international told the paper that sitting on the bench week in, week out is no good for his game and although he loves playing for the club, he would have to leave to find regular first team football.
Manchester United are said to be watching £10 million rated Simon Davies according to the News of the World.
Neil Sullivan is being rumoured as being watched by Manchester United in the News of the World today.  They see him as cover for Fabian Barthez.
Alen Boksic of Middlesbrough is again being linked with a move to Tottenham, although he would have to take a huge drop in salary if he did so.
Having watched the floods in Germany while he was in hospital in his home country, Christian Ziege is said to be donating thousands of pounds to a relief fund for those affected by the deluge.
After an impressive start to the season, Glenn Hoddle is tipping an England comeback for Jamie Redknapp.  The Spurs boss said that Redknapp was surely up there with David Beckham in terms of his quality if he can stay fit, after four years of time out with various ailments.

Saturday  24.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Spurs beat Aston Villa 1-0 this afternoon at White Hart Lane.  Tottenham's winner was scored by Jamie Redknapp.  For a match report, click here and for reaction, click here.
Rumours were circulating at the ground today that Fernando Morientes was at the training ground yesterday, while Hernan Crespo and his advisers will be coming on Monday to discuss a move.
One player not coming to White Hart Lane is Frederic Dehu of Paris St. Germain, who has decided to stay at the French club.
And another is Nottingham Forest's Scottish midfielder Gareth Williams, who said there had been no firm interest for him and he is happy at the City Ground.  The 21 year old did add that if a bid from a Premier League club did come in, he would have to consider it.
The Spurs youth teams travelled to Sheffield United for the Premier League matches this weekend.  The Under-17s won 2-1 while the Under-19s drew 2-2. Michael Malcolm and Ricky Dobson's goals gave the younger side their win, while the Under 19s grabbed a point thanks to goals from  Mark Hughes and John Sutton after being 0-2 down.
Ex-Spurs Neil Young (Bournemouth) and Allan Nielsen (Watford) were both sent off this afternoon.

Friday  23.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

The Daily Express carries a story today stating that Lazio's Argentinian striker Hernan Crespo says he would like to play for Spurs.  It says his representatives will visit Tottenham on Monday to discuss a year long loan deal.  Hoddle failed to deny that a possible deal for Crespo was on, but did come out with a comment on the Spurs website that such speculation is irritating and makes doing deals even harder.
Lazio did sign Enrico Chiesa, a Spurs target, from Fiorentina on a free transfer today.
Meanwhile, the deal for Fernando Morientes looks like falling down because Real Madrid have been unable to complete the signing of Ronaldo from Internazionale.  This means they do not need the money as much and also more importantly, they may wish to retain the services of the forward.
SPURS TEAM NEWS : -  Darren Anderton is doubtful for tomorrow's game against Aston Villa, although Christian Ziege is in the squad with Jonathan Blondel.  Les Ferdinand could replace Steffen Iversen, while Ben Thatcher might continue to replace of Stephen Carr, with Taricco switching sides.
ASTON VILLA TEAM NEWS : - Midfielder Mark Kinsella goes straight into the team for the game after his signing from Charlton Athletic.  Juan Pablo Angel looks likely to start for the first time this season after overcoming a knee injury.  Staunton could push up into midfield to replace the injured Taylor, while Balaban will not be available as he has returned to Dinamo Zagreb on a year's loan.
Ledley King's hip injury has stiffened up after a few days training and this has set back his recuperation.
Simon Davies has been named in the ales squad to face Finland in the World Cup qualifier in Helsinki on September 7th.
Reserve John Piercy has been released by Spurs.
Reserve striker Steven Ferguson has joined Motherwell on loan until January.
Former York City goalkeeper Russell Howarth is going on trial with Spurs with a view to signing, after a deal for the 20 year old at Wolverhampton Wanderers was not forthcoming.
It appears that Milenko Acimovic got two yellow cards for Slovenia in the week and the second was for diving.  After protests from the bench, the second was withdrawn and he was allowed to continue playing in the game.

Thursday  22.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Stephen Carr's injury could be better sooner than the Spurs staff originally thought.  As there is not a complete tear, it might be only four to five weeks rather than two months before he is back in the team, Glenn Hoddle revealed today on the official site.
Hoddle is convinced that he will bring in a striker before the transfer deadline day.  He is still optimistic of signing Morientes from Real Madrid, but said that there were other options who he could secure should the Spanish international not come to White Hart Lane.
Dundee winger Novo Nacho has interested Spurs despite only transferring from Raith Rovers in the summer.  The 23 year old is rumoured by the Scottish Daily Record to be snapped up by next weekend's transfer deadline date.
The new name of Walter Padiani, a Uruguayan playing for Deportivo La Coruna, is the latest to be linked with Spurs.  His club have confirmed Tottenham's interest in the 26 year old, who was recommended to Hoddle by compatriot Gus Poyet.  The Spanish club might let him go, if they sign Real Mallorca's Albert Luque (who was also linked with a move to Spurs) and Pandiani would cost between £15 million and £17 million.
Steffen Iversen is not likely to feature in Saturday's game against Aston Villa, as he is still in Norway where his brother remains in hospital.  His place could be taken by Sergei Rebrov.
Simon Davies has said he realises he has to work hard to build on the success he gained last season in the first team.  The Welsh international said he did not intend to be a player who had one good season and faded away and added that the manager has always been very supportive and encouraging, especially in the area of using their skill on the pitch.  Davies told reporters on Football 365 that he felt that Jamie Redknapp will be an important player for the team if he stays fit and that he believes that Sergei Rebrov could recapture his best form if given an opportunity in the side.
Despite news reports that Tottenham and Glasgow Rangers are being linked to Nottingham Forest's Scottish midfielder Gareth Williams, the Midlands club say that there have been no official bids for the £5 million rated player.
Portsmouth are keen to talk to Tim Sherwood about a move to the South Coast, but would like him on a free transfer.  Tottenham might agree to get him off the wage bill.
David Pleat has warned Glasgow Rangers off trying to buy Les Ferdinand, as Spurs are looking to strengthen their squad not weaken it.
Former Spurs trainee Dean Calcutt has moved from Bradford Park Avenue to Accrington Stanley.

Wednesday  21.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

David Pleat has denied rumours that Tottenham are being linked with a move for Celta Vigo's 24 year old Benni McCarthy.  The South African World Cup forward was said to be coming on loan with a view to a £5.5 million permanent deal, but this has been blown out of the water by the Director of Football's comments.  West Ham United may be the likely destination for McCarthy now.
Meanwhile, Lazio are claiming victory in the battle to sign Enrico Chiesa. They say they are at an advanced stage of negotiations with the 31 year old Fiorentina forward.
Spurs are still pursuing Fernando Morientes and may up their bid of £12 million for the Real Madrid striker.  The Times reports that the signing is close with the only snagging point being the method pf payment for the 26 year old forward.  Glenn Hoddle has poured cold water on this story, so believe what you will.
Leeds United have told Terry Venables that he doesn't need to sell Robbie Keane and that will probably end Spurs' interest in the Irish international.
Simon Davies scored what manager Mark Hughes called one of the great international goals tonight for Wales against Croatia.  Beating three players from the half-way line, he cut inside the box and beat the keeper to score a memorable goal for his country.
Gary Doherty came on from the subs bench to play for the Republic of Ireland against Finland in their 3-0 win.
Slovenian international Milenko Acimovic played for his country in their 1-0 win over Italy in a friendly, but he was sent off in error in the match !!
Another new signing Jonathan Blondel was part of the Belgian side that drew 1-1 with Poland.
Oyvind Leonhardsen was in the Norway team that went down 0-1 to Holland.
Sergei Rebrov got a game for Ukraine as they lost 0-1 to Iran.
Neil Sullivan was stuck on the bench for Scotland, as they lost 0-1 to Denmark.
Spurs Ladies lost tonight to North California Academy Under-17s 5-1 at Hertford Town FC.  Their goal was scored by Lucy Auguste.  A match report will be available tomorrow.
Tottenham had formerly looked at Matt Holland as a potential midfield target, but it appears he will be joining Aston Villa after a £4 million fee was agreed.

Tuesday  20.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Spurs have signed 19 year old Diego Bortolozzo, the midfielder who had been on trial in pre-season, on a free transfer.  He had previously played for Estrela Do Norte in his home country of Brazil and Italian club Treviso and because he has an Italian passport, his work permit is not a problem.
Gus Poyet has had an operation to repair the meniscus in his knee and hopes to be back playing within 4-6 weeks.  The keyhole surgery showed no problems with his ligaments around the joint and he hopes to make a quick recovery to be in the first team at around the same time as Stephen Carr returns.
David Pleat has denied that a bid for Stockport County's centre half Robert Clare has been made by Spurs.
Steffen Iversen will not play for Norway against Holland in a friendly on Wednesday, as he will travel to Trondheim, where his brother is seriously ill in hospital with injuries sustained when his speeding car hit a post in the Norwegian city.  His 22 year old  brother was ragged form the car before it burst into flames and has been operated on after breaking several bones.  Steffen is believed to be ready to stay with him until he is recovered and it is not known if he will be back for Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Les Ferdinand has said that he will not leave Spurs until the end of his contract, but said after that, he might end up still being a Spurs player or could end up anywhere.
In the Jersey tournament, Spurs reserves lost 1-2 to Barcelona and 0-1 to Manchester United.  The first game saw Johnnie Jackson sent off and the team score with ten men through Steven Ferguson.  Colin Calderwood said that the teams were close in both matches with not much to choose between them.  His young side included trialist Bortolozzo, who must have impressed !!
Portsmouth's interest in Tim Sherwood continues even thought they would be able to afford a £1 million fee or his £20,00 a week wages, but not both !!
Darren Anderton has started training and is hopeful of paying in Saturday's game against Aston Villa.
Spurs reserves drew 1-1 at Nuneaton Borough tonight against Coventry City.  Dean Marney scored the Spurs goal.

Monday  19.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Tottenham seem close to getting a striker after all.  They have offered a three year contract to Enrico Chiesa, who is available on a free transfer from Fiorentina.  While other Italian clubs are said t be interested, Spurs have made the first move and the transfer could hinge on the result of a medical after he has missed the majority of the last two season with a knee injury.
Both Manchester United and Arsenal are said to be looking at Neil Sullivan as a potential back-up experienced keeper after Arsenal's deal to take Internazionale's Uruguayan Fabian Carini on loan fell through.  United might nip in for him, but Sullivan, who has been over-looked for the No.1 position at Tottenham, may be interested in the move, although he would not be guaranteed a first team place at either club.
Hoddle has explained why he has gone for Keller over Sullivan in goal on the Spurs website.  The manager said that he wanted competition for places and Keller's World Cup gave him the edge in sharpness, even though he did not play.
Glenn also said that playing Goran Bunjevcevic was all about balance.  He said that with players out, he needed someone to play the anchor man in defence and Bunjy did a job for the boss.
Hoddle was given some good news with Ledley King and Alton Thelwell returning to training this week, with both having a chance to play in Tuesday's reserve match against Coventry City.
Tottenham's initial approach for Stockport County's young centre half Robert Clare has been rebuffed.  The Second Division side do not have to sell their young players and the player said he would rather be in the first team at Edgeley Park, rather than in the youth team of a Premiership side.

Sunday  18.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

It is said in the papers today that Tottenham are unlikely to sign Robbie Keane from Leeds United as they require a £9 million fee paid in full. This will allow them to buy Aston Villa's central defender Alpay.  Tottenham do not appear to have that kind of money and so Glenn Hoddle may have to look elsewhere for a striker.
Tim Sherwood will have to take a 50% pay cut from his £30,000 a week salary at Tottenham should he sign for Portsmouth, the News of the World tells us.  The newspaper reckons he is seeking a leaving settlement that will make this hard hitting pay cut easier to bear.
It looks like Stephen Carr will be out for about 4-6 weeks according to a story on the Spurs website.
Real Mallorca have denied that there has been an offer from either Tottenham and Leeds United for their 24 year old striker Albert Luque, who's agent (his father) is believed to have offered him to both clubs.
The London Evening Standard reports that Matthew Etherington has been the subject of two bids recently, but both have been turned down.  The winger had a transfer request refused recently, with Tottenham refusing to let him go unless they receive an offer in the region of £2 million.  SCBC showed their financial muscle by offering £750,000 and small club Charlton Athletic made a higher sum, but both clubs were knocked back.  Despite scoring the equaliser on Saturday, Matty feels that he is not guaranteed first team football and the report claims his adviser feels that his client is being priced out of a move.
Les Ferdinand might return to Lotus Road to finish his career with Queens Park Rangers if he is not offered a new contract by Spurs when his current one expires at the end of this season.

Saturday  17.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Tottenham drew 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park this afternoon.  Tottenham's goals were scored by Matthew Etherington and Les Ferdinand.  For a match report, click here.  For reaction, click here.
In the game, Stephen Carr tore his hamstring and will be out for several weeks.
It appears that Fernando Morientes is getting the pip about Tottenham's insistence that they are going to sign him.  He says that he will se out his contract at Real Madrid and has no knowledge of Tottenham's interest in him.  It now seems that manager Del Bosque will keep Morientes and Tottenham might have to look elsewhere for a forward.

Friday  16.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Tottenham are said to have had an £8 million bid for Bolton Wanderers striker Michael Ricketts turned down, according to the Independent and the Daily Mail.  Bolton want straight cash, but Spurs would prefer a swap plus cash deal and the Trotters' preference would be for £4 million rated Steffen Iversen.  Tottenham offered a list of players including Sherwood and Leonhardsen.  Sam Allardyce, the Bolton boss, tonight said Spurs are a nuisance and he was disgusted that the leak to the Press had been made, if it came from Spurs.  Glenn Hoddle told the official site that no bid has been made for the player.
Then there is the £9 million offer for Robbie Keane rumour.  Leeds say straight cash will do, but would like Darren Anderton plus £3 million.  Spurs, on the other hand, do not want to let the England man leave.  The London Evening Standard report that the Irishman would welcome a move to Spurs, where he could prove that a regular starting place has all that has been missing for him to show what he can do at the top level.
Juts to add some frisson to things, Hoddle admitted he was at Brighton on Tuesday night to run the rule over Bobby Zamora.
EVERTON TEAM NEWS : - the Richard Wright, the Chinese signing Li Tie and Rodrigo are all likely to start against Spurs tomorrow.  Injury rules out Yobo, Ferguson and Pistone, but Wayne Rooney looks set to make his full debut.
SPURS TEAM NEWS : -  Les Ferdinand may claim a place on the bench after recovering from having his pins removed from his wrist.  Darren Anderton may have a late test on his knee injury, while Ziege, King, Poyet and Freund are all definitely out.
Frederic Dehu of Paris St. Germain is to arrive in England on Monday reports Planet Football, to speak about a move to an un-named English Premier League club.  Manchester City are believed to have lost interest in the 29 year old defender, who can also play in midfield.  This might leave the field open for Tottenham, who need a hard man in the middle of the park to replace the out-going Tim Sherwood.  Dehu has had disagreements with his manager Luis Fernandez and might welcome a new club to start afresh.
Jonathan Blondel has been named in the full Belgium squad for the first time for next week's friendly against Poland.
Bayern Munich's out of contract midfielder Stefan Effenburg, who had been linked with Tottenham, has turned down Austria Vienna and signed a contract with German side Wolfsburg.
Former Spurs defensive midfielder Gheorghe Popescu has joined Dinamo Bucharest from Italian side Lecce.
Ex-Spurs youth midfielder Neil Smith has joined Stevenage Borough after being released by Reading.

Thursday  15.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Glenn Hoddle has labelled the stories that Gus Poyet might be out of football for eight months as "nonsense".  He said that the Uruguayan midfielder had a meniscus problem and did not break down in training, but he hoped that the player would be able to avoid having an operation and be back in action in three months.
Milenko Acimovic has told the London Evening Standard that he was concerned about a move to England because of the history of Eastern European players not setting at the club.  The Slovenian international said he has been made welcome and is happy with the players at the club, although it might take him a while to adapt to the new style of play in the Premiership.  Milo said that he knows he will have to improve his play in the physical surroundings of our national game, but he thinks this will help him become a better player.
Schalke 04 have not taken up the chance to sign Oyvind Leonhardsen, who they have had on trial, despite the Norwegian describing it as a nice club.

Wednesday  14.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Gus Poyet faces eight months on the injury list as he broke down in training and will require surgery on his torn cruciate ligament.  It appears that Gus might have been pushing himself too hard in coming back from a small operation and now has to decide what to do after discussing the matter with the manager.
33 year old Tim Sherwood is being linked with a move to Portsmouth.  A £400,000 bid is being prepared, although Watford are said to be watching the situation of the player who wants away after not being offered an extension to his contract which expires next summer.

Tottenham are supposedly ready to bid £500,000 for Stockport County's young centre half Robert Clare.  Director of Football David Pleat watched the England youth player at the weekend, but Clare is also being tracked by Charlton Athletic.  It was a shock for Pleat who was taking in Coventry City v Sheffield United according to the official site.
Spurs are also after 19 year old James McFadden of Motherwell, the £2 million rated striker who is being tracked by Leeds United and Middlesbrough too.
Tottenham might have taken a chance to nick Glasgow Rangers striker Michael Mols from Sunderland who have had him on trial.  The 31 year old Dutchman is out of favour at Ibrox these days.
Jamie Redknapp has told the official site that his volley against Lazio was probably one of the best he has ever hit.  He said that he enjoyed his home debut and said that he appreciated the reception afforded him by the Spurs fans at the beginning of the game and the ovation he got on his exit from the action.
Steffen Iversen has told the Spurs website that he would welcome the competition from the signing of another forward.  He told the site that "In a whole season you need rest, you can't just play every game throughout.  You want to play every game but you can't, there are too many."

Spurs target Bobby Zamora has signed a new contract at Brighton and Hove Albion, thus effectively ruling out a move away from the Withdean Stadium in the near future ... unless the club need the money.

Tuesday  13.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Spurs are supposed to be conducting talks with Brazilian club Corinthians about the transfer of Ricardinho, who would cost between £1.3 million and £4 million.  The 24 year old midfielder's link to Tottenham was denied by Glenn Hoddle, who intimated that it was his agent who was behind the story.  He also said the same about Denmark's Peter Madsen and Nicos Machlas.
Rumours on the Web indicate that Hoddle might go for Malcolm Christie of Derby County, who cold be available with the Rams having to sell after being relegated last season.  Spurs think he is worth £5 million, but John Gregory wants £2 million more.  However, with deadline day not far off, he might have to bargain to get money for the pacy England Under-21 striker.
Hoddle is still after Fernando Morientes, saying he will not go after other targets until he has exhausted the possibilities with the Real Madrid striker.
Schalke 04 of Germany are keen to buy Oyvind Leonhardsen.  The Norwegian international had a medical in Germany yesterday and will have a week's trial with the Bundesliga side who only have 13 fit players for their first league match on Saturday.
Tottenham have agreed a transfer with Calgary Storm for Lars Hirschfeld.  The Canadian keeper is in his second loan spell and he has impressed the Spurs staff in his time here.  The 23 year old must pass a medical and agree personal terms, but he deal is thought to include a percentage sell-on clause.

Trialist Franco Parisi will have his Tottenham future determined in the next few days.  The Olympic Sharks and Australia Under-20 striker has been with the Tottenham XI under Colin Calderwood.

Monday  12.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Glenn Hoddle has denied that there was a £2 million fee for Bo Qu, the Chinese striker.  He said that the money agreed was £150,000 for a year's loan, although Qingdao Yizhong say it was £250,000.  Hoddle does not think the man called "Kevin" is ready yet for Premiership football, but believes he can develop into a good player.  (Not the way to sell a player asking for a work permit, eh ?)  At the end of the loan, Spurs will have an option to buy Bo at £1.3 million.
Meanwhile, the Spurs boss is still adamant (not Prince Charming) that the deal for Morientes is still viable.  He said talks are ongoing and that the bidding for the player will continue.  Real Madrid are asking for £17 million and Spurs want to pay it by a £6-7 million deposit and the rest in instalments.  However, Real see an arrangement of £13 up front with two subsequent payments as more suitable.  There will be more chance of the 26 year old Spanish international coming to Tottenham if Real sign either Ronaldo or Andrei Shevchenko.  If the latter goes to Spain, then might Sergei Rebrov suddenly become part of the deal, MEHSTG wonders ??
He did take time to deny that Darren Anderton's absence from the side yesterday was due to a knee injury and not anything to do with being involved in a swap deal for Robbie Keane of Leeds United.  Phew, thank goodness it is only another injury !!
Other striker targets should these fall through, are Bobby Zamora of Brighton and Derby County's Malcolm Christie.
Nicos Machlas, the Greek international at Ajax, could be up for sale to reduce the wage bill following a row with coach Ronald Koeman, thus interesting Tottenham again.  The striker who has been prolific in his time in Holland, could be available for less than £3 million.
In a busy day, Glenn also said that he would not pressurise Jamie Redknapp this season, as his rehabilitation into the game would be a progressive one, much as Hod had done with Anderton last year.  The manager believes that if this is done correctly, then he can get some good years out of the former Liverpool midfielder for Tottenham.
Neil Sullivan is in the Scotland squad to play Denmark at Hampden Park on 21st August and the Faroe Islands (away) on 7th September.
Former Spurs legend and Hoddle's old team-mate and captain, Steve Perryman has parted company with J-League side Kashiwa Reysol as manager.

Spurs drew 2-2 with Lazio this afternoon at White Hart Lane.  Dean Richards put Spurs ahead after 74 seconds and a Jamie Redknapp volley added to the lead, before Lazio pulled two goals back.  Click here for a match report and here for reaction.
A resurrection of the "Robbie Keane for Anderton plus £5 million" deal could be back on.  Hoddle is believed to have got to the point on his list, where Keane's name has cropped up, but the deal will only go through if Anderton is part of it, on Venables insistence.
The Sunday Mirror runs a story from Steffen Iversen, who says he can save his manager £15 million on a new striker as he is ready to do the job himself.  The Norwegian told the paper "When I look at our strikers and those of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool I think we match up quite well."  Watch out Stef or the drugs testers will be around after you.

Spurs Ladies lost 2-3 in a friendly against Langford Ladies FC this afternoon, which was a good result as Langford are in the National League - two divisions above Spurs.

Saturday  10.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Bo "Kevin" Qu has signed for Tottenham, subject to getting a work permit, from his club Qingdo Yizhong on a two-year deal.  The official site announced the purchase and said it could cost up to £2 million if he meets certain criteria in his time at Spurs.  21 year old, three times capped Chinese international, Bo, has looked useful in his time on trial at Tottenham.
A Tottenham XI drew 1-1 at Hastings Town this afternoon, with the goal scored by Australian trialist Franco Parisi.
Mauricio Taricco has told the official website that he is looking forward to the prospect of facing some of his fellow countrymen when they play Lazio on Sunday, but feels the game will be a slower, more tactical encounter than the hurly burly of the Celtic match.
Teddy Sheringham will also be meeting up with an old mate, when he comes up against Jaap Stam, his former Manchester Untied colleague.  The Spurs captain said that you want to test yourself against the best players, but he went on to reveal to the Spurs site that he would not be going into Stam too hard as he is bigger than Teddy !!
Goran Bunjevcevic has said that Ledley King will win back his England place this season, as he has been impressed by playing with him.  Bunjy said perhaps they should not talk too much about him, as King should keep his feet on the ground, adding that nobody mentions one certain player any more !!
Pierre Wome, who had been linked with a move to Tottenham, is to be transferred to Fulham, according to his club Bologna.

Friday  9.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

The agent of Fiorentina's Enrico Chiesa has said the player would welcome a move to England to play for Spurs.  There is interest in his services from Juventus, Sampdoria, Galatasaray and Lazio, but the agent said nothing had been decided yet.  He has been out for almost a year with a cruciate ligament injury though.  Spurs are reported in the London Evening Standard to be checking on his medical records to see how he is gettingover the injury, although the 31 year old player is confident he can play until he is 36.
Glenn Hoddle has spoken to Sergei Rebrov about how he will fit in to the team this season.  he said that the player is a good one, as he has scored 23 Champions League goals, but he has spoken about if he will stay or go and told Sky Sports that that had been sorted out.  He hoped that Sergei would feature for Spurs and claimed it could be a big season for him !!
Darren Anderton picked up a knee injury during the Celtic game and is definitely out of the Lazio game, while he might miss the Everton game too.
Hoddle praised Acimovic saying that he wasn't on top form against Celtic, but would prove to be a valuable asset over the next few years for the club.
The Daily Express has Spurs chasing the following list of forwards  - Dario Silva, Raul Tamudo, Albert Luque and Roy Makaay.
Stephen Carr and Gary Doherty have been picked in the Republic of Ireland squad to face Finland in a friendly on Wednesday 21st August.

The Spurs website tells us that Milenko Acimovic is to face his brother-in-law in Sunday's friendly against Lazio.  Dejan Stankovic is married to the Spurs midfielder's sister.

Thursday  8.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Another day, another turn in the tale of Fernando Morientes.  He has spelled out in no uncertain terms how he wants to stay at Real Madrid.  He said he does not want to come to London, does not want to play for Tottenham, they are not in Europe and he wants to stay with his present club in Spain.  So, there's still a chance he might come here then !!
Another day, another target ... the Daily Express hints that Tottenham will go head to head with Juventus for 31 year old Enrico Chiesa, the Fiorentina striker if the Morientes deal does not go ahead.  He will be available for a nominal fee.
Meanwhile, one striker already at the club looks like extending his stay.  Bo Qu will be asked to stay for a 12 month trial if it is possible.  The problem of a work permit is the stumbling block, but Hoddle said he would speak to the chairman about Qu and hopes that it might be possible to add the versatile front man to his squad.
The Sun say that Glenn Hoddle has been instructed to sell Dean Richards if a bid of £5 million or more is received for him, to raise funds for buying new players.  Hoddle has denied this story on the official site, but another reckons Leeds United might be keen to have him as Rio Ferdinand's replacement for £5 million.
Milenko Acimovic has been chosen for Slovenia's squad to face Italy in a friendly on 21st August.
Hoddle revealed on the Spurs website that Christian Ziege turned an ankle last night against Celtic and is out of the game on Sunday against Lazio.  He may be doubtful for the opening game of the Premier League season at Everton.
He apparently joins Jamie Redknapp with the same injury picked up in training.

Wednesday  7.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Spurs drew 1-1 with Celtic tonight at White Hart Lane.  Steffen Iversen scored Tottenham's goal.  Click here for a match report and here for reaction.
Tottenham are chasing Real Madrid's Spanish international Fernando Morientes.  It is reported that a £15.8 million bid has been made, but rejected by the European Champions, but Tottenham have asked to be allowed time until the end of the week to improve their offer.  The player himself is said in the London Evening Standard to be keen to come to Tottenham.  Morientes was thought to be surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu, when Ronaldo eventually arrived, but tonight Jorge Valdano said Real were not pursuing the purchase oft he Brazilian striker ... thus leaving the field open for Tottenham then !!
If this deal falls through, then Football 365 reckon that the next in line will be Deportivo La Coruna's Dutch forward Roy Maakay, who would be happy to come to England.
Ananova carries a story saying that Samuel Eto'o will not be allowed to leave Real Mallorca this season, as they will have to give 50% of any transfer fee to Real Madrid.  The player has said to Christian Ziege that he was impressed with Glenn Hoddle and hoped to join him at Tottenham next season.  By then he will also be eligible for a Spanish passport, thus avoiding the need for a work permit.
The London Evening Standard says that Spurs are trying to seek an extension to Bo Qu's trial period, so that they can take a longer look at him.
Tottenham and West Ham United are thought to be ready to be offered the occupancy of the new stadium to be built at Stratford (East London) for the 2012 Olympic bid.  The 80,00 seater stadium would be built on Hackney Marshes and would be the centre-piece of a London Olympic bid inspired by the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester.  The bid would supposedly be known to be successful or not around July next year, so neither club would have developed their own ground further by then and might consider the intended approach by the British Olympic Association.  It is thought that this would help cover some of the cost of the building and also provide a future for the ground rather than calling in the bulldozers like some of the grounds in the World Cup have seen.
Former Tottenham forward Ricardo Villa has been appointed assistant manager of Racing Club of Argentina by his old colleague Ossie Ardiles.

Monday  5.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Milenko Acimovic is recovering quickly from his hamstring strain and he may be fit for Wednesday's match against Celtic.  This comes as a welcome relief for Spurs fans, who have already seen Gus Poyet be ruled out for three months with a knee injury.
Teddy Sheringham has told Spurs not to sell Darren Anderton.  Glenn Hoddle is ready to argue with the board that Anderton should not be sold to raise funds for a new striker and his veteran forward backs him.  Teddy said that he thinks his England colleague is the best player at the club (hmmm ?) and that to get rid of him for another forward would be a mistake, but Sheringham went on to add that it was up to Hoddle what he wanted to do and the club captain would support his manager in whatever he decided.  The four strikers at the club (Teddy, Iversen, Les and Rebrov) are enough to do well, Sheringham feels, with a role for Rebrov if he gets some lucky breaks.
Tottenham's home game against West Ham United has been moved once more to Sunday 15th September, with a kick off of 4.05 p.m.  The game was scheduled for the following evening, but as that falls on a Jewish holy day, the game has been shifted again, although it will still be covered by Sky TV.

Tottenham beat Watford 1-0 thanks to a late Tim Sherwood goal in Nigel Gibbs' Testimonial at Vicarage Road this afternoon.  For a match report, click here.  For reaction, click here.
A Tottenham XI lost 1-5 at Cambridge United today.  It was very much a weakened second string side with many players being held back from the first team for tomorrow's match in Holland and the youngsters taking part in a youth tournament in Belgium.  Even manager Colin Calderwood put his boots on for 79 minutes !!  John Sutton scored Tottenham's goal from the penalty spot.
Sergei Rebrov is a depressed and nervous man according to the Ukraine manager.  Leonid Buriak has said that Tottenham's treatment has left Rebrov playing out of position and unable to leave because of the high price tag Spurs have put on his head.
Kasey Keller is chasing a place in the Tottenham starting line up after his World Cup exploits for the USA.  The keeper feels that the World Cup was a waste of his time, with twice being told he would be playing.  Kasey said he did not know whether he would be first choice for the gloves, but hopes he can carry on the start of this season where he left off last season.

Friday  2.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

Well, we are back !!  We didn't find out too much about Diego Bortolozzo apart from he is Brazilian, has an Italian passport, looked OK when we saw him play and people have great trouble spelling his name.  He has been passed down to the reserves for Colin Calderwood to sort out, so the silky skilled midfielder might soon be seen as a rugged centre half !!  We have back filled the days news we missed (and will do any more we have missed out in the next couple of days) while we were away and I hope you haven't missed us too much while we have been gone.  We just knew we would miss a huge signing while we were on our holidays ... much like Tottenham did !!
Trialist Bo Qu (as his name should be said ... thanks to Sai Man in Singapore) (and Qu is pronounced Tu) is set to start tomorrow against Watford after coming on as a 57th minute substitute and being involved in three of the goals for Spurs against Crystal Palace.  The player has said he would like to be known as "Kevin" while he is at Spurs.  Surely he doesn't want to hide his true identity for shame of being linked with the club ??
Christian Ziege, Teddy Sheringham and Kasey Keller all returned to training this week and they will likely get a run out in the Watford game too.
Stephen Carr has spoken to the London Evening Standard about playing a full match for the first time in a year.  he said at some stages, he thought he would never get back to playing again, but the birth of his son kept his feet on the ground and now he rates his next challenge of proving he can return to the form he showed prior to the injury to be his biggest yet.
News from Emergency Ward 10 ... Dean Richards picked up a head injury in the testimonial at Crystal Palace and could be missing for a while.
Paul O'Donoghue has had to look forward despite the knock in the eye he received at Queens Park Rangers.  A clash of heads prevented him continuing after 11 minutes at the Loftus Road friendly and he was denied the opportunity to play on after having stitches, in his first start for the first team.
Hospital Watch ... Wolverhampton Wanderers are keeping their eyes on Les Ferdinand.  This is not known as to whether they want to buy him or if they cannot believe someone can be so injured as him !!  A fee of £500,000 could be on the medical cards.
However, Les told the Spurs website that he would be looking to play in the Lazio game after having the last pin removed from his wrist on Thursday 8th August.
Former Spurs defender Justin Edinburgh will return to the club to coach the Under-9s in the Spurs Academy.
Former Spurs midfielder Paul Gascoigne has not been offered a deal with American side DC United after being on trial with them for a week.

Thursday  1.8.2002   (For other Spurs history on this day click here)

The story of the century is true !!  Rivaldo said so.  He thanked Tottenham for their exciting offer to bring him to White Hart Lane to play for Spurs.  So much so, that he even wrote a letter to Tottenham saying so !!!  Was it one of those where Daniel Levy said "Can you sign your autograph for me Rivaldo ?" while holding the letter folded over to be hidden from the Brazilian ??
Meanwhile, Hoddle said that when he knew that one of the top players in the world was available, he was keen to bring him to Spurs.  Well, he was on a free transfer, wasn't he ??  According to the Spurs boss, the only reason that he did not have Rivaldo to pick in his squad next season is because AC Milan went to "extortionate" figures to secure his signing.  One might ask, why didn't Tottenham, if they wanted him that badly ??
Spurs have been hit by a midfield injury crisis.  Gus Poyet injured a knee in the match against Gillingham and will be out for at least three weeks, while Milenko Acimovic pulled a hamstring in last night's testimonial at Crystal Palace and will miss a few games.  Hoddle hoped that the Slovenian's injury was not too serious.
Ledley King sustained a hip injury prior to pre-season training and hopes to return to full training this week.  He said the break had been quite good for him and that he was looking forward to getting back into training.
Spurs have been linked with a move for Brescia's Luca Toni.  The 25 year old striker would cost about £5 million and it is not the first time that the club have been mentioned as potential buyers of the player, who has scored well for his club in Serie A.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are seemingly in a transfer battle for 23 year old South Korean World Cup star Song Chong Gog.  The Pusan Icons star, who can play in midfield or defence, is the reported subject of a £2.5 million bid from Spurs.  Barcelona were also impressed by his marking of Luis Figo out of the game in the Korea-Portugal match in the World Cup.
