A slightly disappointing day with no players leaving or joining.

However, quite worryingly, Spurs are said to be ready to bring in rubbish Derby County goalkeeper Stephen Bywater as cover for the first choice two goalies.
Spurs are reported on the BBC Football website to have opened talks with Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko of Spartak Moscow .  Nothing substantial has been agreed as yet, although his international team-mate Andrei Arshavin has allegedly agreed terms, although Tottenham are said to be a long way away from Zenit St. Petersburg's price tag for the midfielder.  In a really unusual turn of affairs, the agent of Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito has said in a statement that Tottenham are not interested in his client.  Tottenham were scared off by the £14 million asking price for the 29 year old forward, he said.  Meanwhile, elsewhere in Spain, Deportivo La Coruna's Argentine central defender Fabricio Collochini is interesting Newcastle United and Spurs ... possibly as a replacement for Younes Kaboul, who looks set to join Portsmouth for around £5 million.  Blackburn Rovers seem to think that players are going cheap these days and want to spend £4 million of the £15 million down payment for David Bentley on Aaron Lennon, who obviously is nowhere near as good as the man Spurs have just signed.

Spurs and Blackburn Rovers were in talks about the transfer of winger David Bentley.

Defender Anthony Gardner has joined Hull City on loan until January, with a view to a permanent transfer after that.

In true Hollywood cop movie style, Sunderland manager Roy Keane has given Younes Kaboul and Steed Malbranque just 24 hours to decide whether they want to join the North East club.  The Daily Mirror claim that Spurs have had a £10 million bid for Roman Pavlyuchencko rejected by Spartak Moscow, but are keen to pursue their interest in him, while they are almost certain to sign Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito for around £8 million.  They also claim that Tottenham will sign Diego Capel from Sevilla and Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn Rovers.  The Daily Mail have Everton making a £10.75 million bid for four goal striker Darren Bent, but after the hit-man showed great scoring form last night, he must be worth at least £16.5 million.  The Sun run a story that Juande Ramos is looking for a suitable back-up keeper for Heurelho Gomes and is considering Elfsborg keeper Johan Wiland and Bosnian goalie Sead Ramovic, who plays for Norwegian side Tromso.  TeamTalk report that Palermo's Uruguayan 21 year old striker Edison Cavani will stay in Italy with his club despite interest from Spurs and West Ham United.
   The Spurs XI
visited Aldershot tonight and the game ended in a 3-1 win for the Tottenham team, with goals from Alan Hutton, Tomas Pekhart and Andy Barcham.

Spurs are supposedly lining up Russian striker Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St. Petersburg for £17 million to replace Keane.  Younes Kaboul is believed to have snubbed Portsmouth's attempt to sign him and Tottenham are reported to be pulling out of the chase for Valencia's David Villa believing that he will end up at Real Madrid.

Sunday  27.07.2008   (For other Spurs history on this day click here; For the current news on each player in the squad, click here)

A number or papers today claim that Manchester United are stopping their bidding for Dimitar Berbatov at £20 million, as they feel a package, including wages, that could rise to £38 million is too much, although the Sunday Times reckon that a £25 million deal could be agreed, but the relationship between Alex Ferguson and Daniel Levy is blocking it.  The Sunday Express plump for a £24 million deal taking place this week for the Bulgarian forward, but also add that AC Milan, Barcelona and (more unlikely) Newcastle United and Manchester City are also keen to purchase the player.  The News of the World report that Liverpool are making Robbie Keane their sole transfer target, as they think he will look better in red than Gareth Barry and if the deal goes through, the Sunday Telegraph believe that Tottenham will use the money to buy David Villa from Valencia, although Real Madrid and Manchester United are both interested in the forward too.  The Sunday People think it will be Russians Andrei Arshavin and Roman Pavlyuchenko who come in for Keane and Berbatov as the new strike partnership at the Lane.  A story on TeamTalk claims that Spurs have approached the agent of Elfsborg keeper Johan Wiland.  The 27 year old goalie says he is in no rush to leave, but is flattered by the interest in him.
In an interview in the News of the World, Dimitar Berbatov allegedly says he does not go out to nightclubs and prefers to feed squirrels from his balcony.

Defender Anthony Gardner is due to have a medical to go on loan at Hull City until January.  It appears that this is with a view to a permanent move, although the asking price was too high for the newly promoted club initially, but has come down now to what is believed to be £2.5 million.
The Sun claim that Tottenham are set to sell off striker Dimitar Berbatov
for just £25 million to AC Milan or Barcelona, rather than let him join Manchester United for £30 million.  The same source reckons that Paul Robinson could be the player to spark a mini-transfer wave, with Brad Friedel having agreed to join Aston Villa and Robinson could be his replacement, with his move also paving the way to allow David Bentley to move to White Hart Lane.  The Times claim that Robinson will make his move by the weekend.  Back at the Sun, they say that West Ham United have offered young striker Freddie Sears a new deal to deter him leaving amid interest from Spurs and Arsenal.  Mark Hughes has said that Spurs, Everton and Liverpool will be disappointed, as midfielder Michael Johnson will be staying at Eastlands.

The deal to bring John Bostock to White Hart Lane can end up costing Tottenham up to £2 million, with add on fees for reaching 10, 20, 30 and 40 first team appearances, with additional payments for playing for the senior England team and a 15% take of any subsequent transfer

Tottenham have allegedly submitted a year's worth of evidence about Alex Ferguson's pursuit of Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov and evidence on Rafael Benitez's comments in public about how he wanted to sign Robbie Keane.  The Premier League confirmed the receipt of the complaints from Tottenham.

The BBC website says that the move to Sunderland by Pascal Chimbonda, Younes Kaboul, Steed Malbranque and Teemu Tainio looks set to go through with the North-East club paying £23 million for the quartet.  Zenit St. Petersburg have been contacted by Tottenham about the signing of Andrei Arshavin according to the Russian media.  The midfielder impressed for Russia in Euro 2008, with Tottenham believed to have made a £15.9 million offer.  This may not meet the asking price the Russian club have set though.  Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o claims that he has been the subject of offers from Chelsea, Internazionale and Spurs.  The Sun reckon that Tottenham will sign Sevilla winger Diego Capel, Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito, David Bentley from Blackburn Rovers and Spartak Moscow forward Roman Pavlyuchenko in a £57 million spending spree that includes the money raised from the sales of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.  .

Darren Bent has turned down a £10 million move to Sunderland hoping that Everton will pursue their interest in his striking services it says in the Sunday People.  Also in the paper, they claim that the four players Spurs have allowed Sunderland to talk to have been up to see Roy Keane and look around their facilities.  Pascal Chimbonda and Teemu Tainio went up first and it is reported that Younes Kaboul and Steed Malbranque followed after when they found out the numbers on offer for the move.  The paper corners the market on Tottenham stories today, as they also tell that Chelsea and Spurs may be in for Valencia's 30 year old midfielder David Albelda, who will cost as little as £1.5 million and that Blackburn Rovers are close to agreeing a price to buy Paul Robinson.  The Observer claims that Liverpool will bid £18 million for Robbie Keane in the next 48 hours, while some other sources claim it will be between £20 million and £22 million any time up to Thursday.

Tottenham beat C.D. Denia 4-2 in a friendly at the club's Spanish training ground, with goals coming from Adel Taarabt, Jermaine Jenas, an own goal and Darren Bent.
The Press Association report that Pascal Chimbonda has travelled to Sunderland for talks with the club about a move from Tottenham, with this coming after the Daily Mail claimed he was set to turn his back on the Stadium of Light club for a move to Everton or Newcastle United.  It is reported that Blackburn Rovers are believed to have rejected a straight £12 million cash offer from Tottenham for winger David Bentley.

Alex Ferguson thinks Spurs will be embarrassed over the complaint to the FA Premier League about his public pronouncements on buying Dimitar Berbatov.  He claims that he doesn't know where the club got their information form, but he didn't make those comments to a newspaper last week.  When asked about the Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, he described him as "different."

Friday  18.07.2008   (For other Spurs history on this day click here; For the current news on each player in the squad, click here)

Late tonight a statement appeared on the Spurs website from chairman Daniel Levy criticising the managers of Manchester United and Liverpool for their public comments about wanting to sign Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane respectively against the wishes of THFC.  Neither club had reportedly been given any indication that Tottenham would sell nor were they given permission to speak to the players involved.  However, Levy has said that both players now wish to leave for the clubs who have expressed their desire to take them and THFC have made official complaints to the Premier League about the behaviour of those clubs.  Levy went on to say the players have now become negative influences within the dressing room and it perhaps can be drawn from that they will be allowed to leave, but hopefully in circumstances which suit Tottenham rather than their suitors.
Dimitar Berbatov will be a Manchester United player by the end of the month if you believe The Sun, but the Guardian claim Barcelona have turned to the Bulgarian hit-man after failing to take Adebayour from Arsenal and will make a £24 million bid for Dimi.  Sunderland want to become Tottenham, as they have put in bids for Teemu Tainio, Steed Malbranque, Younes Kaboul and Pascal Chimbonda, Football 365 report, for anywhere between £23 million (Daily Mirror) and £12 million (The Daily Telegraph).  It was all a bit of a farce according to the Mirror, as the four players were flown from the Spanish training camp to London and only on touchdown were they told why.  Apparently, they were all to meet the Sunderland representatives to discuss terms, but none of them want to join the club, with Kaboul's agent saying he wouldn't join the Black Cats even if there was an earthquake.  Where this leaves them, Tottenham and Sunderland, who knows.

The Spurs website has informed us that Luka Modric, Didier Zokora and Gilberto have joined the squad in Spain after playing in the European Championship and the World Cup qualifiers respectively.

Rumours that Juventus dropping out of the bid for Xabi Alonso, may leave Liverpool short of funds to buy wither Aston Villa's Gareth Barry and Spurs striker Robbie Keane, surmise the Daily Mirror, although the Sun think that the Reds will find £20 million for Keane anyway.  Diego Capel, the Sevilla winger, said that if his club agree a fee with Spurs, he would consider a move to develop his career, according to the Press Association.  Hossam Ghaly said he is "anticipating" offers for his services from Europe, but if not he will accept a move back to Egypt with his old club Al-Ahly.
Spurs have apparently refused to negotiate with Manchester United or any other club about the sale of Dimitar Berbatov, contrary to reports yesterday about a deal being agreed with the Old Trafford club.

Aaron Lennon has said he is intent on staying at Tottenham, with Juande Ramos saying he wants the winger to be part of his plans at the club.

Gus Poyet has told the Spurs website that he is happy at White Hart Lane and wants to work with the manager and the current squad of players, so will not be joining Manchester United as Alex Ferguson's assistant.

The Sun claim that the transfer of Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United is dependant on the Old Trafford club stumping up £30 million, although they only want to pay £24 million and might tough it out to get a drop in the asking price.  The Guardian claim that Roque Santa Cruz has said he wants to leave for a bigger club, allowing Spurs and Arsenal to monitor the forward's situation.  The Daily Mail reckons that Damien Comolli has been in contact with Zenit St. Petersburg about Andrei Arshavin, but he would prefer a move to a South London Premier league club.  Spurs are believed to have been in talks with Blackburn Rovers yesterday about a transfer for David Bentley.  The winger is priced at £17 million, but Spurs would prefer a lower price tag or to use players as part exchange.  Paul Robinson's involvement in the deal is at risk, with Rovers' manager Paul Ince saying he is not interested in the keeper, although right back Pascal Chimbonda has been mentioned as an alternative.  The Independent reckon Blackburn would prefer a cash deal to allow them to buy replacements.  The Daily Express claim that Spurs are willing to sell Robbie Keane too and will be concentrating on brining in new strikers.  Following this theme, the Daily Telegraph reckon Juande Ramos might turn to Real Zaragoza striker Diego Milito, while other sources think Roman Pavlyuchenko is another in the frame, as Comolli watched him in action for Spartak Moscow at the weekend.

It's all Spurs in the papers this morning, as the Sunday Express reckon that Spurs have turned down a £20 million bid for Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United, but will sell for £25 million (or £35 million in the Daily Star), although over at the News of the World they claim that the club have struck a £24 million deal for the sale, but it is on delay until Tottenham can secure a replacement for the Bulgarian.  Who that replacement is concentrates the attention of many of the papers.  The NoTW put us in the frame for Blackburn Rovers' Roque Santa Cruz, while the Mail on Sunday reckons it will be either Luis Garcia of Espnayol and Roman Pavlyuchenko of Spartak Moscow and also ponders on THFC making an £18 million swoop for Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Andrei Arshavin before Barcelona sign up the Russian.  The Sunday People continues Alex Ferguson's love of all things Tottenham with a story that he wants Gus Poyet to join him as his number two to replace the departing Carlos Queiroz.  The Sunday People write that Spurs could bid for West Ham United central defender Matthew Upson as there are still doubts about injury-hit duo Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate.  Why then go for someone who is injury-hit themselves, unless we want to go for a like-for-like replacement ??  The People seem to have cornered the market on weird Tottenham stories this week, as they sensibly claim that Blackburn Rovers might make a £5 million bid for goalkeeper Paul Robinson (or £2 million in the NoTW), but then claim that Juande Ramos has brought in Fulham's haphazard keeper Tony Warner as cover for Heurelho Gomes !!  Haven't we got enough goalkeepers on the books and one of them must be better than Warner ??  Another story the paper runs is that Hull City have pulled out of talks about a loan for Ricardo Rocha on the grounds that they didn't realise he was that short.  Television must put inches on you !!  Warming to their subject, they go on to tell us that Stoke City have been shocked by the £4 million price tag Spurs have put on defender Anthony Gardner.  Not half as shocked as we are !!  The Potters are willing to shell out £1.5 million.  And still the People keep them coming, with Fulham being set to make a £4 million bid for midfielder Jamie O'Hara in the next 48 hours and they claim the youngster will consider the move to have first team football (a story also carried in the News of the World, who say that a loan deal was refused).  The News of the World reckon Everton are shirking at paying £12 million for Darren Bent, but Sunderland are keen on the Spurs striker, while the Stadium of light club are also willing to pay £4 million for Steed Malbranque, with the midfielder also interesting Manchester City and Aston Villa.  The Sunday Express claim that Aaron Lennon has "played down" talk of him leaving White Hart Lane.

The Times claims that Tottenham have succeeded in obtaining a work permit for PSV Eindhoven goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, with a special dispensation as he has not played 75% of Brazil's internationals over the last two years.  The deal will cost Spurs £7.8 million.  Central defender Ricardo Rocha is interesting Hull City and he may move either on a season long loan or a permanent move, depending which source you read.  Goalkeeper Paul Robinson has turned down a season long loan move to West Bromwich Albion and is hoping to complete a transfer to Aston Villa or Middlesbrough, although Villa have agreed a deal for a US keeper.  Almost as an afterthought, an article in the Daily Mirror about slave Cristiano Ronaldo mentioned that Manchester United have made a £20 million bid for striker Dimitar Berbatov.  Other sources reckon a deal could be done and dusted within a week.  Apparently, the Times claims that Liverpool are selling almost half their team to secure funds to bid for striker Robbie Keane.  The Daily Star claim that Tottenham are set to pay Asante Kotoko £2 million for Ghanaian international striker Eric Bekoe.  The 21 year old is also being chased by Hertha Berlin.  The Sun inform us that midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng is close to a £3 million move to VfB Stuttgart.  Nelson Cabrera, a 25 year old Paraguayan international central defender, is unlikely to join Spurs, as he cannot be guaranteed first team football.

The BBC website claims Spurs are close to signing Espanyol striker Luis Garcia and Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley.  The 27 year old Spaniard would cost around £8 million, while Bentley would go for around £15 million.  Meanwhile, Rafael Benitez has said that Liverpool are interested in signing Robbie Keane and claims that the two clubs are talking and he said he will what comes out of it.  The Daily Express claim that Espanyol keeper Carlos Kameni turned down a £4.5 million move to White Hart Lane because Tottenham wanted a clause in the contract preventing him representing Cameroon in the African Cup of Nations.  The Sun runs a story claiming that Tottenham want to sell a whole team of players and five substitutes (including Young Pyo Lee, Robbie Keane, Younes Kaboul, Anthony Gardner, Paul Robinson, Kevin Prince Boateng, Steed Malbranque, Michael Dawson, Hossam Ghaly, Paul Stalteri, Adel Taarabt, Teemu Tainio, Darren Bent, Ricardo Rocha  and Pascal Chimbonda), but this was denied in a BBC website article later in the day.

It looks as though Spurs will be taking the field next season with no recognised strikers.  With Manchester United looking to step up their interest in Dimitar Berbatov, although they only want to pay £23 million rather than the £30 million Tottenham want, there is news that the other two senior strikers might be leaving too.  The Daily Mirror, which carried the Berbatov story also reckon that Sunderland want to prise Darren Bent away from White Hart Lane for £12 million, with Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers waiting to see what happens.  Over at the Sun, they run a story, which we heard about last night (see incoming), in which Robbie Keane has handed a transfer request in to the club as he wants to play for his boyhood heroes Liverpool.  Benitez wants him and is willing to offer Peter Crouch plus £5 million to secure the Irishman's services.  Tottenham have been linked with a £9.5 million move for Espanyol forward Luis Garcia, in an attempt to have at least one man in attack next season.  Also in Spain, Spurs are being linked with Sunderland and Manchester City in an interest in Spanish international striker Dani Guiza.  Roma and Barcelona are also keen on the Real Mallorca forward.
