Tottenham complete the signing of Charlton Athletic's forward
Darren Bent for a club record fee of £16.5 million. Bent
has signed a deal of up to six years with Spurs.
With the arrival of Darren Bent, the media have been
speculating that Jermain Defoe would not be happy behind the
new signing, Berbatov and Keane in the pecking order
and that he will move on to Portsmouth, Manchester City, Newcastle
United, Aston Villa, Liverpool or Manchester United. However,
in the London evening papers, the England striker said he would stay
and fight for his place in the team.

Spurs are reported to have agreed a fee for Darren Bent with
Charlton Athletic according to Sky Sports News.
Tottenham have announced a home pre-season friendly against Serie A
side Torino on Saturday 4th August with a 3.00 p.m. kick off.
The Times report that Sours have agreed a
£1.4 million transfer fee for Reto Ziegler, who will make his
loan move to Italy's Sampdoria permanent. There are also
stories claiming that Yuri Berchice will join Spurs at the
end of the month when his Athletico Bilbao contract ends. The
headstrong young defender was interesting Manchester United and
Chelsea, but Tottenham have moved in quickly and may pay a nominal
fee to ensure that the good relationship between the two clubs is
preserved. .

Charlton Athletic are still supposed to be asking for £17 million
for Darren Bent according to The Independent and Chief
Executive Peter Varney said something similar on last night's BBC
London sports show. Spurs will listen to offers for Jermain
Defoe if the Bent signing ever goes through, as long as they are
in the region of £12 million, so say the Daily Mirror, who reckon
Tottenham's payment for Bent will be £13 million.
The first team will face St. Patrick's of Dublin at Richmond Park on
Thursday 12th July (kick off 7.30 p.m.) in pre-season friendly.

Charlton Athletic is being held up by the relegated club's
insistence in setting the fee for the forward at more than the

Spurs and Glasgow Rangers are chasing Bordeaux winger Julien
Faubert, who says that a move to White hart lane is tempting,
although AS Roma are also said to be interested in signing the 23
year old, who might cost in excess of £4 million. His agent
hinted that a move to Spurs could hinge on them retaining Pascal
Chimbonda for some reason. The only thin I can think of is
that he would like a fellow Frenchman in place to ease him settling
in. Papers still report Darren Bent joining Tottenham

Figures of between £12 million and £14 million have been quoted in
today's papers, as Spurs chase the singing of Charlton Athletic's
Darren Bent.
Wayne Routledge and Ben Alnwick were unused substitutes
in England Under-21s defeat in the UEFA European Championship
semi-final against Holland tonight. The home country went
through with a 13-12 penalty shoot-out win following a 1-1 draw
after extra time. Tom Huddlestone was not available for
selection because of the suspension for his red card in the last
group game.
Canada were knocked out of the Gold Cup in
the semi-final by a 1-2 defeat at the hands of the USA.

Spurs have been linked with a £3 million move for Internazionale
defender Marco Materazzi, the Italian international who was
head-butted by Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup Final of 2006
according to the Sunday People. The Sunday Mirror has Spurs
chasing another centre half ... this time it is West Bromwich
Albion's England Under-21 player Curtis Davies, who they will
bid £6 million for, but also throw in a ready made replacement in
Anthony Gardner and additionally winger Wayne Routledge.
The News of the World reckon Spurs will bid £12 million for Darren
Bent, who wants to stay in London and also make moves for Dutch
Under-21 defender Royston Drenthe for around £5 million, as
well as Troyes midfielder Biaise Matuidi who would cost £1
million.
Wayne Routledge and Tom Huddlestone were late
substitutes for England Under-21s in their 2-0 win over Serbia that
takes them through to the semi-final. Routledge came on in the 80th
minute, while Huddlestone entered in the 88th minute and left the
field two minutes later having been dismissed for what was believed
to be abuse of a linesman in a match which saw eight Serbia
physically assault Blackburn Rovers' Matt Derbyshire after he scored

Spurs will meet Championship winning side Sunderland at the Stadium of
Light on the opening say of the season on August 11th (subject to

Ledley King will undergo surgery on his left knee to remedy a
tear on his cartilage, which was aggravated on England duty on

Jermain Defoe to test his commitment to the club, as he has two
years left on his current contract. The club do not want him
to run his deal down, so if he does not
accept the £30,000 a week offer (22% up on his wage at the moment),

The rumour comes off the back of news that Spurs are ready to

The News of the World claim that Jermain Defoe has turned down
the opportunity to re-join West Ham United in a £12 million transfer.
He is reported to have said that he would not return to the Boleyn

Tottenham have agreed a deal with RC Lens to bring 17 year old
midfielder Adel Taarabt to White Hart Lane on a permanent
deal. The French youth international has been at Spurs on loan
since January, but will seal a transfer as he has been saying will
happen since his loan move.
The club also announced on it's website that an
agreement to sign Athletic Bilbao's
17-year-old left-back Yuri Berchiche has been signed.
Having represented Spain at both U16 and U17 level and having been
watched for two years by Spurs, the talented youngster joins the
Academy side.
Rumour wise, the Daily Mirror claim that Sevilla are chasing the Spurs
full back Pascal Chimbonda and are reputedly ready to pay £10
million. The Independent reckon Tottenham are favourites to
sign Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder, although other papers
put Aston Villa in the chase for the £10.2 million rated Dutch
international. Talks are reported to have already taken place
and Sneijder is said to be interested in teaming up with Tottenham's
Dutch Head Coach Martin Jol and would prefer a move to London
rather than Birmingham. Good news as Birmingham City might be
serious suitors for striker Mido, who Steve Bruce could turn
to after losing out on signing Australian forward Mark Viduka.

Conference side Rushden and Diamonds on Tuesday 31st July for a

charge of using racist and threatening language at Pascal

and Sweden was abandoned in the last minute when a home fan ran on
to protest about the sending off of Christian Poulsen after his side
had come back from 0-3 down to be level at 3-3. Unfortunately,

The Sun link Tottenham with a £7 million move for Manchester United
striker Alan Smith, just because he hasn't been offered a new
contract. This may be in light of the story in the Daily
Mirror, where Tottenham failed in a bid for Middlesbrough's
Australian forward Mark Viduka. Morten Gamst
Pedersen's agent says that the top five clubs are keen on
signing the Blackburn Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen.
Paul Robinson, Ledley King and Jermaine Jenas, who came
on as a sub in the 77th minute, played for England in their 1-1 draw
