   Spurs are being linked with an £18 million move for Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips and the Stamford Bridge's rubbish defender Lassana Diarra in the Sun, while the Daily Express have Aston Villa down as having Jermain Defoe on their shopping list, while the Daily Mail reckons Alex Ferguson does not want the Spurs striker.  However, he appears wanted by Portsmouth and Sunderland, who the Daily Express believe have put in a £8 million bid for him, although the Times say that he only wants to go to a top four team and in addition to United, Chelsea and Liverpool are looking elsewhere, meaning he might stay at the Lane.  The Daily Telegraph reports that West Ham United may be interested in buying striker Mido from Spurs,

   Tottenham complete the signing of Charlton Athletic's forward Darren Bent for a club record fee of £16.5 million.  Bent has signed a deal of up to six years with Spurs.
   With the arrival of Darren Bent, the media have been speculating that Jermain Defoe would not be happy behind the new signing, Berbatov and Keane in the pecking order and that he will move on to Portsmouth, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Liverpool or Manchester United.  However, in the London evening papers, the England striker said he would stay and fight for his place in the team.
   Former Spurs reserve defender Mark Arber will join Stevenage Borough from Peterborough United on August 1st

   Spurs are reported to have agreed a fee for Darren Bent with Charlton Athletic according to Sky Sports News.
   Tottenham have announced a home pre-season friendly against Serie A side Torino on Saturday 4th August with a 3.00 p.m. kick off.
  
The Times report that Sours have agreed a £1.4 million transfer fee for Reto Ziegler, who will make his loan move to Italy's Sampdoria permanent.  There are also stories claiming that Yuri Berchice will join Spurs at the end of the month when his Athletico Bilbao contract ends.  The headstrong young defender was interesting Manchester United and Chelsea, but Tottenham have moved in quickly and may pay a nominal fee to ensure that the good relationship between the two clubs is preserved.  .
  
Former Spurs reserve striker John Sutton has joined Wycombe Wanderers from St. Mirren.

   Charlton Athletic are still supposed to be asking for £17 million for Darren Bent according to The Independent and Chief Executive Peter Varney said something similar on last night's BBC London sports show.  Spurs will listen to offers for Jermain Defoe if the Bent signing ever goes through, as long as they are in the region of £12 million, so say the Daily Mirror, who reckon Tottenham's payment for Bent will be £13 million.
   The first team will face St. Patrick's of Dublin at Richmond Park on Thursday 12th July (kick off 7.30 p.m.) in  pre-season friendly.
  
Former Spurs defender and assistant manager John Gorman will take over as SCBC first team coach on a temporary basis until a new appointment is made.

   The Daily Star reports that Darren Bent will sign for Tottenham within the next 48 hours for £14 million, while The Sun reckons Alan Smith will turn down a move from Manchester United to Middlesbrough and they put Spurs as favourites to snap up the England international.  Spurs are also reported to be watching Lyn Oslo's Nigerian young striker Edu, who is also a target for Arsenal.

   The Daily Mirror claim that the deal to sign Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic is being held up by the relegated club's insistence in setting the fee for the forward at more than the believed £15 million Spurs are offering.  And on the same lines, Bordeaux are saying that they want at least £10 million for winger Julien Faubert.  Meanwhile, Mido claims he has not agreed a move across London to Fulham, but is waiting to see if the takeover at Manchester City means they will resurrect the proposed move to Eastlands.  Sky Sports website claims that Tottenham have offered the Egyptian forward to Portsmouth.
  
A Spurs XI will face Justin Edinburgh's Grays Athletic at their Recreation Ground on Tuesday 7th August with a 7.45 p.m. kick off.
   Former Spurs reserve goalkeeper Simon Brown has signed for Brentford after being released by Hibernian.

   Spurs and Glasgow Rangers are chasing Bordeaux winger Julien Faubert, who says that a move to White hart lane is tempting, although AS Roma are also said to be interested in signing the 23 year old, who might cost in excess of £4 million.  His agent hinted that a move to Spurs could hinge on them retaining Pascal Chimbonda for some reason.  The only thin I can think of is that he would like a fellow Frenchman in place to ease him settling in.  Papers still report Darren Bent joining Tottenham in the coming week for anything from £15 million upwards.  West Bromwich Albion are said to have put a £10 million price tag on their central defender Curtis Davies and Wayne Routledge is said to be a target for the Midlands club, who will bid £3 million for him, although Fulham are also said to be keen to sign Routledge permanently after spending the season on loan there.  Sky Sports website reckon Tottenham have been in touch with 34 year old Italian striker Christian Vieiri's agent about a move to North London, after he ended his contract with Atalanta.

   The Daily Mail claims that Charlton Athletic striker Darren Bent will sign for Tottenham on Monday for a club record fee of £16 million, despite noises coming out of the South London side that indicate that they will only accept the price they set at £17 million.  .

   Mido is widely reported to be ready to link up with fellow Egyptian Mohamed Al Fayed at Fulham after becoming disillusioned at not getting a game at White Hart Lane.  The Daily Mirror reckon there will be another striker out of the club, as they think Tottenham will be receptive to offers for Jermain Defoe after they sign Darren Bent, in a move which would leave the club with only three experienced strikers if both these rumours are true.  The Sun report that Tottenham are closing in on Younes Kaboul, the Auxerre and France Under-21 defender.

   Figures of between £12 million and £14 million have been quoted in today's papers, as Spurs chase the singing of Charlton Athletic's Darren Bent.
   Wayne Routledge and Ben Alnwick were unused substitutes in England Under-21s defeat in the UEFA European Championship semi-final against Holland tonight.  The home country went through with a 13-12 penalty shoot-out win following a 1-1 draw after extra time.  Tom Huddlestone was not available for selection because of the suspension for his red card in the last group game.
  
Canada were knocked out of the Gold Cup in the semi-final by a 1-2 defeat at the hands of the USA.  Paul Stalteri once more captained the team, who were denied a last minute equaliser by a dubious offside flag.  Former Spurs keeper Kasey Keller earned his 100th US cap in the same match.

   Darren Bent has told Spurs and Liverpool that he will got to the club which will provide him with the best opportunity to become and England regular.  Tottenham are also being linked with Toulouse's Swedish striker Johan Elmander, who is attracting attention from clubs all over Europe.

   Spurs have been linked with a £3 million move for Internazionale defender Marco Materazzi, the Italian international who was head-butted by Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup Final of 2006 according to the Sunday People.  The Sunday Mirror has Spurs chasing another centre half ... this time it is West Bromwich Albion's England Under-21 player Curtis Davies, who they will bid £6 million for, but also throw in a ready made replacement in Anthony Gardner and additionally winger Wayne Routledge.  The News of the World reckon Spurs will bid £12 million for Darren Bent, who wants to stay in London and also make moves for Dutch Under-21 defender Royston Drenthe for around £5 million, as well as Troyes midfielder Biaise Matuidi who would cost £1 million.
   Wayne Routledge and Tom Huddlestone were late substitutes for England Under-21s in their 2-0 win over Serbia that takes them through to the semi-final. Routledge came on in the 80th minute, while Huddlestone entered in the 88th minute and left the field two minutes later having been dismissed for what was believed to be abuse of a linesman in a match which saw eight Serbia physically assault Blackburn Rovers' Matt Derbyshire after he scored England's second goal.  England will meet home side Holland on Wednesday in the last four.

   Today's Darren Bent rumour is that he turned down West Ham United as he wants to move to Liverpool, so write the Daily Mirror.  Meanwhile, The Sun have resurrected Martin Jol's transfer chase for Anderlecht's Swedish winger Christian Wilhelmsson.
  
Canada beat Guatemala 3-0 in the Gold Cup quarter final tonight to progress to face USA in the semi.  Paul Stalteri was playing in defence as captain of the side.
   Former Spurs striker Teddy Sheringham has been awarded a MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

  MEHSTG's spin story ... Agents are up in arms over the results of Lord Stevens' inquiry into transfer dealings.  Thousands of pounds are said to have been taken from transfers over the last few years and some agents are miffed, as they claim it should be millions of pounds, not just thousands.

   The Daily Mirror claim that Spurs and Liverpool will now contest the race to sign Charlton Athletic's striker Darren Bent, although Tottenham have only offered £12 million so far ... some £5 million short of the Addicks' asking price.  Roma and Torinio are both supposedly interested in signing full back Young Pyo-Lee according to the TeamTalk website.
  
A Spurs XI will visit Staines Town's Wheatsheaf stadium on Saturday 21st July with a 3.00 p.n. kick off in a pre-season friendly.

   Spurs will meet Championship winning side Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on the opening say of the season on August 11th (subject to the selection of games for live coverage by Sky TV, Setanta and movement to accommodate recovery from UEFA Cup ties).  This is followed up by a home game against Everton on the Tuesday and Derby County on Saturday.
   Ledley King will undergo surgery on his left knee to remedy a tear on his cartilage, which was aggravated on England duty on playing a B international against Albania and games against Brazil and Estonia.
   Ben Alnwick, Tom Huddlestone and Wayne Routledge all remained on the bench during the England Under-21s 2-2 draw with Italy in the European Championships in Holland last night.
   The Daily Mirror claim that Spurs have offered a three year deal to Jermain Defoe to test his commitment to the club, as he has two years left on his current contract.  The club do not want him to run
his deal down, so if he does not accept the £30,000 a week offer (22% up on his wage at the moment), they will listen to offers for the 24 year old England striker.  The rumour comes off the back  of news that Spurs are ready to outbid West Ham United for Charlton Athletic.  Meanwhile, back at the Addicks official website, their Chief Executive said that Bent had been in talks with West Ham, but had turned down the chance to play his football at Upton Park, even though the Irons were the only club to match the asking price.  The Times reckons that Monaco have expressed an interest in full back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, but they feel it is more likely that Young-Pyo Lee will leave with Italy his destination.

  MEHSTG's spin story ... Two men in the street said they had no interest in becoming manager of Manchester City.  While the club await the take over by a former head of a Far Eastern country, although he is thought to have had his assets frozen (painful !!), the two men said that they had not been approached to mange the club in turmoil and nor would they want to if the opportunity arose.

   The Daily Mirror says that Tottenham will battle with Newcastle United for the £1.5 million signing of Barcelona's French 30 year old midfielder Ludovic Guily.  The Guardian repeats the story about Wigan Athletic going for midfielder Danny Murphy.  Spurs are being linked with an interest in signing Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres, who looks like leaving the Spanish club, with Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Liverpool and West Ham United also being involved in newspaper rumour implying they would be in for the young star, who would cost £17 million.
   Spurs defender Paul Stalteri captained Canada to a 2-0 victory in their Gold Cup match against Haiti.
  
A Spurs XI will face Dartford FC at their Princes Park ground on Monday 16th July with the game kicking off at 7:45 p.m..

   The Daily Mirror reckon that West Ham United are still chasing Jermain Defoe, despite yesterday's indication that he was not interested in the move.  .
   Tom Huddlestone started England's European Championship group match with the Czech Republic which ended up 0-0.  Tom was substituted ten minutes from time, while Wayne Routledge came on from the bench for Kieran Richardson after 56 minutes.  Ben Alnwick was an unused substitute.

  MEHSTG's spin story ... Manchester United have been blasted by fan groups after a new scheme has been introduced that locks supporters who buy season tickets into purchasing a Wayne Rooney duvet cover every time they go into the Man U Megastore.  One fan - a Mr. G. Ullible - said "I am outraged.  Why do we have to buy a Wayne Rooney duvet cover when we have eight already ??"

   The News of the World claim that Jermain Defoe has turned down the opportunity to re-join West Ham United in a £12 million transfer.  He is reported to have said that he would not return to the Boleyn Ground, nor would he entertain a move to Portsmouth, as "an insider" said the England forward felt that Spurs could qualify for the Champions League next season and would not want to walk out on that.  In the Sunday Mirror, a piece reckons that Wigan Athletic are to bid £1.5 million for Danny Murphy, after being turned down with a £1 million offer in January, but Birmingham City are reported to be interested also.

   Spurs and West Ham United are supposedly involved in an auction for Charlton Athletic's England striker Darren Bent with a minimum of £18 million required.  With this is seems that prices seem to be rising higher than the inflation in Argentina, because Birmingham City are supposed to be in for Tottenham's £6 million Egyptian forward Mido.

  MEHSTG's no-spin story ... The England players have decided to give their appearance money from their internationals to charity for the next four years.  A noble effort by the squad, but it is just a ruse to make sure they don't get abused as they did in Barcelona when they played Andorra.  Maybe I am cynical, but it looks like a way of off-setting some of the vitriol that might come their way, but I am sure the travelling hordes might not refrain from the practice if they let their country down on the pitch.

   Tottenham have agreed a deal with RC Lens to bring 17 year old midfielder Adel Taarabt to White Hart Lane on a permanent deal.  The French youth international has been at Spurs on loan since January, but will seal a transfer as he has been saying will happen since his loan move.
   The club also announced on it's website that an
agreement to sign Athletic Bilbao's 17-year-old left-back Yuri Berchiche has been signed.  Having represented Spain at both U16 and U17 level and having been watched for two years by Spurs, the talented youngster joins the Academy side.
   Rumour wise, the Daily Mirror claim that Sevilla are chasing the Spurs full back Pascal Chimbonda and are reputedly ready to pay £10 million.  The Independent reckon Tottenham are favourites to sign Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder, although other papers put Aston Villa in the chase for the £10.2 million rated Dutch international.  Talks are reported to have already taken place and Sneijder is said to be interested in teaming up with Tottenham's Dutch Head Coach Martin Jol and would prefer a move to London rather than Birmingham.  Good news as Birmingham City might be serious suitors for striker Mido, who Steve Bruce could turn to after losing out on signing Australian forward Mark Viduka.
  
A Tottenham XI side will travel to Conference side Rushden and Diamonds on Tuesday 31st July for a pre-season friendly with a 7:30 kick off.
   Former Tottenham winger Darren Anderton has signed a new deal to keep him at Bournemouth
for one more year.

   The sale of Alan Sugar's shareholding in the club has been agreed from 2nd July for £25 million, taking ENIC's holding to 66%.
   In more share news, the Daily Mail reckons that
Norwegian shipping billionaire John Fredriksen is interested in buying the club.
   Frighteningly, the Daily Mirror claim that Spurs and Celtic are battling for West Ham United striker Marlon Harewood.  Let's hope he is drawn to the lure of Champions League football.

   A member of West Lancashire Council has been suspended after a police charge of using racist and threatening language at Pascal Chimbonda in Tottenham's visit to play Wigan Athletic at the JJB stadium in April.
   Spurs have supposedly been alerted to the fact that Manchester United are not going to offer Alan Smith a new contract.  Luis Figo says if he plays for a European side, it will be Internazionale of Milan and therefore, he would not be going Spurs despite rumours that they had been in touch with him regarding a move to N17.  The Sky Sports website claim that Wayne Routledge is ready to leave Tottenham to get first team football.
   Paul Robinson and Ledley King played the whole of England's 3-0 Euro 2008 qualifying win in Estonia tonight, while Jermaine Jenas was an 88th minute substitute.
  Jermain Defoe was on the bench, but was not used in the game.
   Emil Hallfredsson played 53 minutes of Iceland's 0-5 defeat in the Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden.
   Dimitar Berbatov played the whole of
Bulgaria's 2-1 win over Belarus in the Euro 2008 qualifier tonight.
  
Paul Stalteri played 90 minutes for Canada in their Gold Cup 2-1 win against Costa Rica in Miami .
  
Having announced that the club will be ending their use of Stevenage Borough's ground for reserve games (see yesterday's news), Tottenham revealed that they will be using Brisbane Road from next season.  As part of these two deals, they will play friendlies against the two teams in the pre-season build-up.  Broadhall Way will host Spurs on Saturday 7th July kicking off at 3.00 p.m., while Leyton Orient will be at home to Tottenham on Wednesday 1st August with a kick off at 7.45 p.m.

   MEHSTG's ear to the ground has heard that the Reserves will be ending their tenure at Broadhall Way - Stevenage Borough's ground - with a move to Brisbane Road - the home of Leyton Orient - being on the cards.
   Tottenham are to play in the Vodacom tournament in South Africa in July as they warm up as part of their pre-season programme.  Spurs will play Kaiser Chiefs on 21st July in the ABSA stadium in Durban and then Orlando Pirates on 24th July in Cape Town's Newlands Stadium.  The two home sides will play each other on 26th July and the winner will meet Tottenham on 28th July in Pretoria at the Lotus Versfield ground.
  
Spurs are today linked with Ajax winger Wesley Sneijder, who has said eh wants to leave the Dutch club, while Celtic's 29 year old Russian midfielder Jiri Jarosik has said he wants to return home or to a Premiership club, with Tottenham one of the destinations he might favour..
   Tom Huddlestone and Wayne Routledge (who came on as a substitute at half-time) played in England Under-21's 5-0 friendly international
win over Slovakia U21 at Carrow Road.  Huddlestone swept in the fourth England goal from just inside the right side of the penalty area.  Ben Alnwick was an unused substitute.

   The Sun claims that Tottenham are getting ready to gill the space left by Pascal Chimbonda (although they don't say where he's going) with Portuguese defender Jose Bosingwa.  Football 365 clear things up a bit by saying Spurs turned down a £10 million bid for Chimbonda from Chelsea.  Sky Sports website reckons Spurs and West Ham United are interested in Reading full back Nicky Shorey and that Roland Varga, a 17 year old Hungarian with MTK Budapest has had a trial with Tottenham, among other clubs such as Reading and Heart of Midlothian.  Varga is supposedly the "Hungarian Cristiano Ronaldo."

   The News of the World claims that Darren Bent will turn his nose up at a big money move to West Ham United to join Tottenham.  A weekly wage of £60,000 will not tempt the England striker to Upton Park, but the paper reckons this will make Irons manager Alan Curbishley to make a move for Jermain Defoe.  Alex Ferguson is reportedly keen to keep England forward Alan Smith, despite rumours of Tottenham's interest according to the Sunday Mirror and the Star on Sunday says Tottenham have turned their attention to Liverpool's Australian Harry Kewell and Atletico Madrid's Bulgarian Martin Petrov in their search for a left winger.

   Dimitar Berbatov scored both goals for Bulgaria in their 2-0 victory over Belarus in their Euro 2008 qualifier.
  
Paul Stalteri captained Canada to a 2-2 draw in a Gold Cup match.
   Emil Hallfredsson played 82 minutes of Iceland's 1-1 Euro 2008 draw with Liechtenstein tonight

   Teemu Tainio lasted only 28 minutes of Finland's 0-2 reverse at the hands of Serbia in the Euro 2008 Qualifying match this evening.

  MEHSTG's no-spin story ... The Euro 2008 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden was abandoned in the last minute when a home fan ran on to protest about the sending off of Christian Poulsen after his side had come back from 0-3 down to be level at 3-3.  Unfortunately, the fan's actions have handed a 3-0 win to the Swedes

   The Sun link Tottenham with a £7 million move for Manchester United striker Alan Smith, just because he hasn't been offered a new contract.  This may be in light of the story in the Daily Mirror, where Tottenham failed in a bid for Middlesbrough's Australian forward Mark VidukaMorten Gamst Pedersen's agent says that the top five clubs are keen on signing the Blackburn Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen.
   Paul Robinson, Ledley King and Jermaine Jenas, who came on as a sub in the 77th minute, played for England in their 1-1 draw with Brazil at Wembley tonight.  Jermain Defoe was a non-playing substitute.

  MEHSTG's spin story ... When Jose Mourinho said the club needed three signings this summer, the Chelsea fans were very excited, but what they had not realised is that he said "What Chelsea need are free signings this summer", after his row with Roman Abramovich meant he would not get any spending money.
