clubs did not have. He was brave enough to admit that in
the last 12 years, Tottenham have made a lot of mistakes in appointing
people who have not succeeded in the manager's job ... including
during his time as chairman. Sugar added that this time Daniel
Levy and the board were not rushed by fans or media into making a
"knee-jerk" appointment and he thinks that the new structure
put in place with Arnesen and Santini could be the start of something
good for Tottenham.

The
Daily Mirror claims that Sylvain Wiltord will be a priority for
Jacques Santini on his arrival at White Hart Lane. The French forward has
been given a free transfer by Arsenal and as Santini has known the
striker since Wiltord was a teenager, he is keen to bring him
in. Santini has been picking him for the French side despite his
lack of first team opportunities at Highbury.
To
fit Wiltord in, the Mirror claim that Frederic Kanoute might be on his
way out of the club. The Sun also speculate that this will
happen as Santini kicked Kanoute out when he managed Lyon.
The
Sun reckon Jacques Santini will also be after Bosman transfer target
Bixente Lizarazu.

It
has transpired today that Daniel Levy has been having discussions with
Jacques Santini for three months now and the French national coach has
been taking English lessons in preparation of taking control of the
first team at White Hart Lane. Allegedly, Santini is on £1.3
million per annum and has signed a three year deal, although other
sources hint that he might be on a one year rolling contract.
It
appears that Frank Arnesen's choice of assistant coach to Santini is RKC
Waalwijk's Martin Jol, formerly a player with West Bromwich Albion.
The
London Evening Standard claim that Santini may also bring his
chief scout Dominique Cuperly with him.
The
article also reckons that Lyon striker Sydney Govou might be brought
in at Tottenham by the new head coach. The 24 year old
sneaked into the |French squad for Euro 2004 because of injury to
Ludovic Giuly.
Another
French forward who is being linked with an interest from Santini is
Arsenal's Sylvain Wiltord, who will be released this summer. We
have better forwards than him already, so I can't see this being
sanctioned by the board.

Tottenham
announced this evening that French national coach Jacques Santini will
take over as the new Head coach at White Hart Lane after the Euro 2004
tournament. Santini said on the Spurs site that he was
"delighted to get the opportunity to join Tottenham Hotspur. I am
an ambitious man and it has always been a dream of mine to coach a big
English club in the most exciting league in the world. Tottenham
Hotspur are a very big club, with a wonderful history and great
traditions. I am determined to help the Club return to its place
amongst the elite and look forward to joining after Euro 2004."
Chairman
Daniel Levy said He was the outstanding candidate because of his
experience, coaching ability and track record at all levels. The
Club and our fans have had to endure an unprecedented level of
speculation regarding this appointment and this is undoubtedly due to
the significant number of high calibre individuals who were interested
in coming to Tottenham. The supporters have been very patient and for
that I thank them. With Jacques on board, an existing talented
squad and further strengthening over the summer, we can now look
forward to the start of next season with renewed optimism."

The
London Evening Standard claim that Daniel Levy, Frank Arnesen and Paul
Kemsley (THFC Vice-Chairman) met in a hotel at Heathrow yesterday,
talking about tactics, transfer targets and managerial prospects.
They then were alleged to have resorted to a £90/hour conference room
where the newspaper imagines that they met with Claudio Ranieri
and his agent Phil Smith, who left prior to the Tottenham
party. Levy spoke to the reporter at the time and said that it
had been a coincidence and that the wrong meaning was being read into
the people being in the same place at the same time !!
The
story alleges that the meeting was to discuss Ranieri's employment as
Spurs manager, but there was more speculation that Middlesbrough's
Steve McLaren and Martin O'Neill are highly desirable for the
Tottenham board. It is claimed in other reports that
Ranieri has agreed terms after talks with Valencia to return to his former Spanish
club.
Meanwhile,
the Daily Mirror claim that Spurs have been in touch with French
national coach Jacques Santini to sound him out about taking over at
White Hart Lane.
IN

Dutch national manager Dick Advocaat said that he had heard nothing
