Spurs are due to have discussions with striker Dimitar Berbatov about a new contract in the next two weeks, which would see him increase the £20,000 a week he currently earns.  Meanwhile Giles Barnes of Derby County  will be staying put having helped the Rams to the Premier League via the play-off final, but he told the media that it was "Arsenal who were my favourite team when growing up, not Spurs" so his big interest is in playing at the Pirates Stadium next season ... which of course was the Arsenal ground when Barnes was young.  The Daily Mail claim that should Michael Owen leave St. James Park, new Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce would make a move for Jermain Defoe and the Spurs striker would be almost guaranteed a regular starting position in the team.  There is some good news though, as £9 million rated West Ham United midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker is resisting efforts by Tottenham to sign him, as he thinks he will be above playing for them and is aiming to get into the Arsenal or Manchester United sides.
Michael Dawson has had to pull out of the England squad for the games against Brazil and Estonia as he has sustained a groin injury.

In the Sunday Mirror, it is claimed that Martin Jol might make an audacious bid to bring Manchester United's Ryan Giggs to White Hart Lane.  The Welsh captain is thought to have been the subject of a January effort to sign him, but now Jol thinks he could solve the left sided problem at Tottenham.  The News of the World pins it's story to the on-going tales of Spurs chasing Charlton Athletic's Darren Bent (for in excess of £10 million) and Nani of Sporting Lisbon (£13.5 million).  The paper goes on to purport that Jol is also keeping an eye on Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing and West Ham United's want-away captain Nigel Reo-Coker.  Back at the Mirror, Liverpool are thought o have made a £5 million offer for Portsmouth left back-cum-midfielder Matthew Taylor, but Spurs, Fulham and Aston Villa are also reported to be showing interest in the player.  To balance things up the NoTW claim that the former West Ham United manager Harry "Hangdog" Redknapp is interested in signing Tottenham's ex-West Ham United forward Jermain Defoe and will put Tottenham's resolve to the test with a £5 million bid for the England striker.  After the experience this season with the two Egyptian players, an unlikely story in the Daily Star Sunday links Tottenham with a battle against Fulham to sign international Mohamed Zidan.
The England squad to face Brazil in a friendly international and Estonia in a Euro 2008 qualifier includes Paul Robinson, Michael Dawson, Ledley King, Jermaine Jenas and Jermain DefoeAaron Lennon has had to drop out after he was originally included, but a twisted knee in Friday's B international has put paid tot his participation in the two up coming matches.

The rumours today include one in the Daily Express which says that Tottenham are monitoring the Michael Owen situation with a view to bringing the England striker to White Hart Lane.  Believe it if you dare !!  £8 million will secure the sulky (no, that's not a typo) skills of West Ham United captain Nigel Reo-Coker after the Irons agreed to his transfer request as  long as prospective buyers meet the asking price and Spurs, Arsenal and Newcastle United are said to be in for the England Under-21 captain.

Tottenham today completed the signing of 17 year old Welsh international Gareth Bale.  The SCBC player will cost an initial £5 million, which could rise to £10 million depending on the successful triggering of conditions in the deal.
Manchester United are preparing a huge bid for striker Dimitar Berbatov.  The Sun believe it will be £27.5 million plus forward Louis Saha, who is said to be worth £11 million.  Sky Sports website reports that the Bulgarian's agent said he is happy at Tottenham and would be willing to discuss a new contract if the club are interested in that.  Spurs meanwhile have also received a £10 million bid from Chelsea for right back Pascal Chimbonda according to the Daily Mail, although the defender says he is happy at Tottenham, with the Times having Spurs earmarking £13.5 million to spend on winger Nani of Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.
Aaron Lennon lasted only 17 minutes of England B's 3-1 win over Albania at Turf Moor tonight.
He limped off with an ankle injury, but Jermaine Jenas, Michael Dawson and Ledley King played the whole 90 minutes, with the Spurs skipper starting off alongside his team-mate in defence, before stepping up into midfield for the last 20 minutes.  Jermain Defoe was a 75th minute substitute for David Bentley.

News is out that Tottenham have agreed a transfer fee with SCBC for their talented 17 year old Welsh left back Gareth Bale.  With the deal costing between £10 million (£6 million + conditional payments) to £6 million (the Daily Mirror), the player will undergo a medical in the next 24 hours before any further movement in the deal is made.  Don't forget season ticket renewals have to be in by Friday !!
The Daily Mail claim that Tottenham have beaten Olympique Lyonnais to the signing of Auxerre central defender Younes Kaboul.  The 21 year old has apparently told the French media that he will sign a four of five year deal with Spurs shortly, possibly after Saturday's final Ligue 1 games and will cost anywhere between £6 million and £8 million.  The Mail also reckons that to keep our best players, the club have issued a £15 million price tag should anyone think about buying Jermaine Jenas.  Sky Sports link Tottenham with a move for Atletico Madrid's Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov, who looks like he might leave the Spanish side.  The Times reckon that the club will listen to offers for Danny Murphy and Teemu Tainio.

We have been forwarded this message, which we are happy to publicise ...

"Isn't it about time we had a statue at White Hart Lane to commemorate one of the real legends of English football, Bill Nicholson?

If any of you don’t know what he did for the club, he gave 68 years service to Tottenham Hotspur, as a player from 1937, and as manager from 1958 to 1974.  He led Spurs to the first English League and FA Cup double of the modern era (1961), and the first European trophy by a British club in 1963.  In all he won us the League once (the 1961 double), the FA Cup 3 times, the League Cup twice, the European Cup-Winners’ Cup (1963) and the UEFA Cup (1972).

There’s a petition doing the rounds at the moment, I urge all true Lilywhites to sign it, and please pass this on to other fans and forums.

http://www.petitiononline.com/sga77827/petition.html

The petition reads:

To: Daniel Levy (Tottenham Chairman)

This is a petition for the Spurs board to have a statue of the legendary Spurs manager Bill Nicholson built just outside or within White Hart Lane, with a small plaque underneath the statue with one of his famous quotes in.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned "
