Reaction to yesterday's defeat by Newcastle United has come quickly, with the Head Coach and some players having plenty to say.  Jonathan Woodgate said that players should regard it as a kick up the backside to make sure that they perform until the end of the season and earn their place in Tottenham's future, while Juande Ramos said that ht was very disappointed by the team's application and that they are not playing at "maximum motivation."

With changes due in the summer, the rumours are really starting to fly now.  Croatian winger Danijel Pranjic of Heerenveen is linked with a move, after Spurs have had the 26 year old left sided player watched in his country's recent game against Scotland, where he was marked by Alan Hutton.  Tottenham's interest in Villareal goalkeeper Diego Lopez has been confirmed by the Spanish club, but he has signed a new contract with the La Liga outfit, while the Sky Sports website claims Tottenham scouts are looking seriously at Molde FK's young defender Vegaard Forren, even though the 20 year old says he is concentrating on his career in Norway.
Spurs Reserves won 3-1 against Fulham reserves tonight at Brisbane Road
with goals from Danny Rose, Adel Taarabt and Simon Dawkins
   Juande Ramos and fitness coach
Marcos Alvarez have been called up by Health Minister Alan Johnson MP to use their success in slimming down the Spurs squad to fight the Government's battle against obesity.

The Sunday People claim that Spurs will let Paul Robinson leave for £2 million in the summer with Aston Villa and Middlesbrough likely to be interested parties and that Kevin Keegan is supposedly keen to take Aaron Lennon to Newcastle United at the end of the season.  According to the News of the World, Juande Ramos will be taking the Spurs players to a summer "sweat camp" instead of the traditional lucrative pre-season tour to pastures anew, as he bids to start next season with a fit and well-prepared squad.  NotW also claim that Spurs have targeted Alain Nkong of Mexican side Atlante and believe the Cameroon midfielder will add an attacking edge to the team's midfield.  The Sunday Mirror also say that Spurs have been checking out Newcastle United striker Michael Owen over the last few weeks, as a possible replacement should Dimitar Berbatov leave the club.  In other Mirror news, they claim that Juande Ramos will move for Fiorentina's Argentine midfielder Mario Santana, although Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers are also interested, while Aston Villa are looking to sign Leicester City's promising midfielder Joe Mattock for £1.5 million, although Glasgow Rangers and Everton are also keen on the England youth international.  The Sunday People claim that Spurs will try and sign Middlesbrough winger ... no don't worry, it's not Stewart Downing ...    The Daily Express has a Tottenham day by claiming that Juande Ramos is set to reduce the number of  English players at White Hart Lane by selling off Paul Robinson, Jermaine Jenas, Tom Huddlestone, Darren Bent and Aaron Lennon in the summer.  Coming in to replace them will be David Villa (Valencia), Diego Milito (Real Zaragoza), Johan Elmander (Toulouse) and Ronaldinho (Barcelona) the Express says, even though most of these seem to be strikers !!  On top of that they reckon that Michael Dawson will be snapped up by Kevin Keegan, who missed out on getting Jonathan Woodgate to join Newcastle United.
While the Express were on a roll, they report that Spurs did hundreds of pounds worth of damage to the League Cup trophy in their after match celebrations, with the base being smashed when it was dropped.
The Under-18 Academy side lots their unbeaten record of ten consecutive wins, when they succumbed to
Portsmouth 2-3 with the Spurs goal-scorers being Kyle Fraser-Allen and Danny Rose.

The Daily Mirror claim that Spurs target Luis Fabiano, the top goalscorer in Spain, is looking to find a way out of Spain after his house outside Sevilla was broken into and he fears for the safety of his family.  He obviously hasn't scrutinised the crime statistics in England then !!  Tottenham seem to be rated as favourites to buy him, probably because of the Ramos link, but Manchester City, Manchester United, AS Roma and Real Madrid all seem keen on the Brazilian too.  Darren Bent seems to fear that he will end up going the same way as Jermain Defoe unless he can get off the bench and start more matches.  Some papers read this as being a veiled threat as to starting more games elsewhere.

Spurs hit the transfer rumour headlines with Manchester City supposedly ready to bid £32 million for Dimitar Berbatov in the Sunday Mirror, but in the News of the World they reckon Juande Ramos has named Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate, Dimitar Berbatov, Alan Hutton and Robbie Keane as the only players certain to stay at the club next season, so offers will be considered for any other members of the squad.  This is a little at odds with a further piece in the same paper which reckons he has told Sporting Director Damien Comolli to find seven new players to add to the squad to achieve the aim of Champions League football.  On Football 365, the agent of Pascal Chimbonda thinks that Spurs will be willing to enter talks about a new contract for his client, after saying the move by Newcastle United would be shunned because the situation at the St. James Park club was bizarre.

Information has been received from one of our readers about
Joe Lewis, who effectively owns Spurs, that since September he has lost roughly £580 million by buying 10% of the U.S. investment bank Bear Stearns. Their shares were around $105 and $95 when he bought them. Today they are around $3 and there is a takeover bid at just $2, but ...

  • Contrary to rumours, Joe Lewis does not need to sell Spurs to fund any part of the losses.
  • He bought the shares in Bear Stearns with cash and so has no pressure to sell any assets, of which the holding company that owns Spurs is a part.
  • Spurs ability to operate in the transfer market is unlikely to be restricted. Joe Lewis was a billionaire before this collapse and after it he is still substantially a multi-billionaire.

However, that is not to say that Lewis might be more open to a decent offer for Spurs if it came along but he is primarily a long term investor.
