So, excluding the
last minute goal by Arsenal, could there be anything else you want for
Christmas ?? Of course, if Sol signed tomorrow, that would really
wrap up a fantastic festive season. But with Sir Alan Sugar
pulling out of Tottenham faster than Man U out of the FA Cup and a new
buyer (the English National Investment Company = ENIC) coming in, it
signals a new era for the club. Whether or not that will be a
better future is debatable. With rumours coming out of AEK Athens
that they are now doing worse than before ENIC came in and comments
relating to a five year plan to get Spurs back into the challenging
group at the head of the premier League, the change in fortunes may not
be as quick as some of the Spurs fans want.
Realistically, ENIC
may be no different from Sir Al, in that they are business minded and
will be careful in protecting their investment. The one difference
is that they have a portfolio of clubs around the continent and with
media and gaming interests may be able to realise the potential of the
club, leading to more profit reinvested into the squad. There are
some big hitters associated with ENIC - Time Warner, two large financial
institutions, Canal Plus (the European TV network) and Silvio Berlusconi
(chair of AC Milan and media mogul). With Sugar already hinting at
media companies being in discussion with Tottenham Hotspur plc for a
deal and the news that ENIC are keen to push forward in this area of the
club's assets, it could be sooner rather than later that Spurs join the
other major clubs in the country with a TV link-up with a media company.
As for things on the
field, the same story continues of good form at home and woe away.
However, there are promising signs for the optimistic. We have
beaten Liverpool and Leicester at home, while drawing with Arsenal,
perhaps Spurs are not far away from the top six. The problem comes
away from home. Should Spurs have picked up even a third of the
points available, then they could be up there already. Lack of
consistency has been a problem for years now, but even a modicum of
success away could make a lot of difference to the League position and
to the fans optimism. Perhaps things are so bad after all ??
Whatever you get for
Christmas and whatever results Spurs pick up, have a good one and may
the New Year be a good "1" too !!
Keep the faith.
