With games flying by
and few points being collected away from home, what does the future hold
in store for Tottenham Hotspur ?
With neither manager
nor players knowing quite why Spurs perform so poorly in away games, it
looks like there is unlikely to be any points gained on the road for
some time to come. Surely, it would be easy to counter what is
coming at the defence ? With a pacy attack and players who are
able to hold onto the ball, it could be the ideal counter-attacking
ploy. Rebrov can pass the ball to one of his own team for a
start. Armstrong showed in the match against Sunderland, that,
even though he is not fully match fit, he has the speed to trouble
defenders. If we are to keep the pedestrian Sherwood in the side and
Freund to win the ball, then pair them up with Etherington to burst up
the wing. This boy has pace and now that GG has sold Dominguez, he
will have no option than to play Matty - will he ?? Rather than
settling for five defenders in the side and inviting the home side to go
towards the Tottenham goal, let's beef up the midfield and make it hard
to reach the edge of our box in the first place. It could even
turn into a tactic like the one forced on Pleat when he played Clive
Allen alone up front, with five in midfield. Who knows, it might
just work !!
With Dominguez going, the
crowd will feel lost without someone to cheer, although I always thought
it a sign of how far Spurs have fallen to hear the cheers ring out when
the Portuguese dwarf started taking his tracksuit off. It
is part of the necessary "surgery" of management needed at the
club, but once again, it raises the question of who is coming in to
flesh out the squad ? The young players don't seem to be getting a
chance, however badly the established players are doing. I can
understand that GG doesn't want to destroy their confidence, but if they
don't get much of a chance (or 38 minutes like Davies did against
Birmingham City), then what will they think then ?
Isn't this the role
of the manager in all this ? To motivate and work out how to get
the team to play to their greatest strengths ? Has GG given up the
ghost ? Has Sugar had enough of the man they once called "Gadaffi"
? Has Pleat finally found out that he can't work with either man
? We have long said that there are too many cooks spoiling the
once famous broth of Tottenham Hotspur. Whoever is in charge of
negotiations with players (is that supposed to be Pleat ?) is not making
much of a fist of it either. Stephen Carr is worth everything he
asks for and if he doesn't get it, then who can blame him for not being
satisfied ? When he sees Les earning £20,000 + per week and most
of the time he has been out injured, while Carr consistently turns in
outstanding performances. Well, I know that I would not be happy
about that situation.
Still, the next few
games are going to be a doddle aren't they ? Liverpool, Leicester
City, Manchester United and then Arsenal. Top by Christmas ?
I think not.
Keep the faith.
