A month in and the
team are sitting in sixth position without hitting any sort of form
really. Is this a good or bad thing ? Some say that to pick
up points when you are not playing well is the sign of a good
side. Others hint that Spurs have not played anyone of note yet
and when they do they will get hammered. This could happen
tomorrow when Spurs visit Leeds United, but they have had injuries and
have struggled to string results together. Could it be another
chance to nick points where we would not normally have had an
opportunity ? But is this tactic good enough ? not for some
Spurs fans who regard the football being served up now as a betrayal of
our heritage.
But what of the facts
? I know they don't tell the whole story, but at the end of the
season it is the team with most points that wins the Championship.
No knowledge of how they played or who they beat. Now, I like
every other Spurs fan, would love us to return to the flowing football
that we remember from years gone by, but times have changed. The
first priority for Tottenham to progress is to work hard. Not
pretty, but necessary. Only when Tottenham become a winning team
will the football become part of the equation. Whether or not
George Graham is capable of taking all the way along this path or not
remains to be seen. He's done some of the foundation work, whilst
upsetting a large number of Tottenham supporters, with a side that
grafts. Not all the time, but this is the challenge that they must take
up, as Manchester United didn't get where they are today by sitting back
and letting teams come at them; they work very hard and then play their
football when they are in a position to.
I really don't think
that Spurs have the players at the moment to play the way we would like
them to. The passing and movement are way off what you would
expect from a top team and possession being nine tenths of the game,
Spurs give the ball away far too much. There is also an uneasy
feeling about the side at the moment, with many players gesturing at
each other and moaning. Despite the come-from-behind wins, there
appears to be a disunity simmering just below the surface. I hope
it stays there as the last thing we need is a split amongst the players.
With Anderton
recovering just in time for England's World Cup games ... er, sorry,
Tottenham's game at Leeds, we will have to wait for Sol to come back in
defence and then we might be able to push forward with a bit more
ingenuity. That or a new signing to provide some sparkle in
midfield would be nice, but with the current uncertainty with the
transfer system causing Spurs to lock the war-chest, there seems little
chance of that happening. Still, here's to a few more exciting
games - hopefully in our favour !!
Keep the faith.
