Tottenham Hotspur are not a selling club. So what did we do ...
give Ginola away ?? While in harsh business terms, £3 million for
a 33 year old appears to be a good deal, how much will it cost to
replace him ?? Sugar went on that player leaves the club because
we no longer require their services, well is that true ?? We need
someone to set up chances for Rebrov and the rest. We need someone
who can turn a game for Spurs, we need someone to hurt the opposition by
going past their players. While Ginola was perhaps guilty of not doing
this every single time, there is nobody else in the Spurs side who
can. And does this show the club's ambition ?? What must Sol
think of it all ?? When will his services not be required any
further ... when a big fat cheque falls on Sugar's desk from Juventus ??
And if Ginola is surplus to requirements, why is Ruel Fox still at the
club ??
Where is the replacement
for such a player anyway. No member of the current Spurs squad
could step into his shoes straight away. Korsten is still shaking
off the cobwebs of one injury, when his next one comes along and Matthew
Etherington was supposed to be weaned into the side when Ginola was
withdrawn (as he regularly was). So, do we assume that this £3
million will be added to whatever is left in the transfer pot to bring a
world class replacement to White Hart Lane ?? Zenden is the fans
choice, but having set his sights on Lazio, would he really consider a
move to Tottenham with no prospect of European football on the horizon
?? Baggio made the sports pages as a possible incomer, but not
really George's type of player is he ?? The other name being
bandied about is the floppy haired, bandy legged Scouser McManaman, but
he is just the same type of player as Ginola, but not as
effective. All he has on the Frenchman is a few years (not tricks)
in his locker.
Even so, it is strange that
only a couple of months after Ginola said he should be playing for the
likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and AC Milan, he
makes a move to a Midlands backwater that you would do well to find one
of Villa's own fans to describe it as one of the top sides in
Europe. The personal deal offered must have been very tempting,
even if it didn't include the his and hers Mercedes and big house in a
posh part of Birmingham (a contradiction in terms there I think). Let's hope he fares better than Benito Carbone !!
We will surely find out when he comes back to the Lane on 28 April 2001
(date very likely to be moved to accommodate Sky TV's showing of our
destruction by the French wing wizard).
Combined with the news that
Allan Nielsen and Espen Baardsen are on their way to Watford, this
leaves the squad even thinner than when last season ended. So much
for a large squad and a rotation system !! It is now that Spurs
fans want to see Spurs become a buying team and the only selling that most
fans want to see from Sir Sugar would be the bulk of his
share-holding. Business is business, but football ain't like any
other business Al. Or should I say Sir !
Keep the faith (however
hard that might be).
