So, a 7-2 thrashing of struggling Southampton and everything is fine.  Well, not quite Holmes.  Unfortunately, one swallow does not make a summer and it was only Southampton.  I know full well that you still have to score them, whoever it is against, but Spurs were given a helping hand (or foot) in a couple of the goals and even then at 1-2 down in the first half things looked decidedly dicey.  Coming after the lacklustre 1-0 win at Coventry and that drab 1-1 with Bradford, when nothing would go right, I suppose it was nice that nearly all the efforts that hit the target went in.  Let's hope that the side have not used up all their luck in one game.  I think we might need some at Highbury.

The games previous to the two mentioned above saw a run of 0-1 defeats.  These came against Chelsea, Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday.  GG goes on about the defeats this season all being by a single goal, which is nice, but it still equates to "nil point" as they say in Eurovision.  Nobody wants to see a repeat of the hammerings we took under Francis and Gross, but we need to convert those losses into points and our draws into wins.  The killer instinct is just not there at the moment and I hope that is why the search is on for more fresh blood.  That almost arrived in the (large) shape of John Hartson ... in more ways than one !!  The collapse of his transfer was a major coup for our medical staff, who must have been instructed, in a manner akin to that of Chairman Gerry Block on Sky's Dream Team, to find some reason to get out of signing the huge lump of lard.  Well, it worked, whatever happened and we can now look ahead to Sergei Rebrov lining up alongside Chris Armstrong in our forward line !!  Well, at least the money could be spent on somebody who is worth the money.  £6 million for Hartson.  Purlease !!

The likelihood of a place in Europe looks more and more unlikely and with it the hope of bringing higher class players to the Lane.  Therefore we are shopping at Waitrose, but not quite Fortnum and Mason's just yet.  Therefore, the only reason top players would come to Spurs at the moment is for the money.  Without a UEFA place at least, there is little to attract those sorts of players to the club.  The promise of a golden future is OK to bring those youngsters for the next few years in, but for those who could take us to the next stage of GG's plan, I presume he knows who he wants and will go about getting them.  But then it looks like he wanted Hartson.  That sort of player should never even be considered to be seen in a Spurs shirt; if he wants that sort of forward, there are better examples and for a darned sight less money too. Let us hope that those scouting trips have all been worthwhile. The young Spurs are coming on nicely and it would be nice to give one or two of them a taster of what life in the Premier League is like, once all hope of a European place has finally gone.

For the remaining games of the season, let's get behind the team and try and move up into the top five.  While it may seem out of reach, with a few decent performances and other results going our way, it might just happen.  Let's face it, even against Southampton, who would have thought Spurs would have scored 7 (seven).  Keep the faith.
