And we come to the end of another year and what have we done ? Well, for the first time in many years a trophy adorns the cabinet in the club offices. We have a stable financial situation (which is important despite the signings we all want), a manager who has the right idea about getting points and wins (even though he might not play as exciting as we all want, hell we have seen some action at the Lane this season) and a squad that is shaping up. With a little more taken out of the Chairman’s transfer fund, things could almost be there. Not for a sustained period of navy blue and white domination, but enough to see Tottenham around the top of the league and in Europe on a regular basis. We all know about the striking position, but the good results achieved by the current squad undermine the attempts to get money to sign a new forward. However, it is exactly the games like Bradford and Leicester which cry out for a poacher who would have put them beyond our opponents reach long before the end.

The last few weeks have been strange for one reason and another. The England v Scotland matches meant lack of games and the lack of fixtures on Saturday’s has been very disturbing. Our next Saturday home game is set for January 22 against Sheffield Wednesday, unless an FA Cup 4th round home draw is obtained. And who would have paired us with Newcastle for our foe in the competition they cheated us out of last season ?? Kismet ?? Or just an opportunity to wreak revenge ??

The exit from the Worthington Cup was very disappointing in the nature of the defeat. Although you rarely see as many Spurs players having a bad day at the same time, it is a salutary reminder that there must be a further investment in the club before consistent success can be achieved. And it’s not a short term thing - winning the Worthington last season has shown that it covered up an awful lot of cracks in the side. It is achieving what is possible with the players available now, then planning for the future. The Lund affair is symptomatic of the general state of the club. When we are trying to find a striker, who fits the exact e-fit put out by our management team, someone who might do a job for us until that star striker comes along is thrust under our nose by happy circumstance, the club is still dithering and may well lose out to some other side ready to take a punt on him. Writing this before the Newcastle United FA Cup tie, we could realistically be left with nothing to play for and we wouldn’t even have reached Christmas.

Still, a new Millennium and new hope springs forth. Ah, the lot of a Tottenham Hotspur supporter is not a happy one most of the time, but boy, when it comes good, do we enjoy it ... like 7th November. Have a great Millennium from all at MEHSTG.
