As I write this leader, the club have made progress in two cup competitions and hopefully will go further. Kaiserslautern make a more difficult hurdle to overcome than Zimbru and the side will have to play to their max. over the 180 minutes of the tie. Fulham will have been played by the time this issue is out and again, a strong performance will be required to go on to face Leeds or Leicester. The cups are once again Tottenham’s best bet for a trophy, as the League form has already shown signs of being too inconsistent. 3-0 up v Coventry and then letting them back into it to finish 3-2, then 2-1 up against Leicester and then losing out 2-3 after Ginola was substituted. There has been a lack of resolve in closing the game down when we are in the lead and it is something Tottenham have never been good at. The worrying thing is that George Graham sides are supposed to be good at it and therefore, we should be. I hope that things will right themselves when Sol returns, but that is as long as he returns with Spurs and not Manchester United as rumoured. We have heard strong evidence from a reliable source that Campbell will be gone at the end of the season, which is no great surprise, but if he is to go anywhere, I hope it is to the continent. At least there he will be out of sight out of mind and won't come back too often to haunt us.

The other worrying aspect of Spurs’ form is that we are losing at home. The crowd’s frustration with Chris Armstrong is probably originating from the lack of signings and he bears the brunt as he is out there, not doing what the crowd expect. He is not the only player who has been jeered and he won’t be the last, but the atmosphere could be more supportive - although not when the ground is half-empty like v Crewe. Come on Spurs - review the pricing of tickets for games you know won’t sell out.

The much heralded four players that Graham has mentioned that would make our squad complete have failed to materialise. Is the money available from Sugar ? Is GG willing to spend it if it is there ? Are our scouts filing good reports and is Pleat the stumbling block when it comes to wages ? The value of signing players can only be assessed after they have been doing their stuff on the park for a while. The value of a striker who can convert chances into the sought after currency of goals is worth his weight in gold, so why can't we find one who is willing to come and do it for us ? At least Piercy was a ray of hope. Good luck to the lad.

The Man U match showed that the squad is capable of winning against the top teams, but until investment is made in the side, this will be one out of every ten games against them. Better players will increase that ratio and help refinance the side. Let’s hope that Sugar doesn’t go for one swallow making a summer. Keep the faith.
