| Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 21st
January 1899.
Played for Whickham Park Villa and
Newburn in non-league in the North-East.
Debut away v Sunderland on 26th March
1921 as centre half.
Played in the forward line.
Scored 18 goals in the 1921-22 season,
but did not establish himself in the side until the 1925-26 season.
Made 153 appearances for the first team,
scoring 20 goals and two more in 13 FA Cup outings.
Left to join Chester in July 1931.
He then went on to play for Norwich City, Clapton Orient and Ashford
Town, before he joined the Tottenham nursery club, Northfleet as
player-coach. In 1937, he took charge of the newly formed
Northfleet Amateurs and was appointed to the Tottenham staff as an
assistant coach in 1938-39.
Went on to hold a position on the Chelsea
training staff, but Thompson returned in the 1950s to be in charge of
our youth team until 1960. Stayed on in various backroom roles
until he retired in August 1969.
Died at home in Leyton on 1st January
1970. |
