To say that this was a disappointing end to the season is a massive understatement, as all that Mauricio Pochettino has instilled into the Tottenham side evaporated in the North-East sunshine as Newcastle United waved goodbye to the Premier League with a 5-1 win.  Spurs had been so solid for so long this season, but it all fell apart with a defeat that saw Newcastle's biggest win of the campaign after being relegated by other results in midweek.

Keeping the ball in the first few minutes, Tottenham fans were heard over the home support. A long passing move ended with Walker's shot being blocked and then Eriksen put a left foot shot wide after the Magpies defence failed to come out to him. Harry Kane flashed a volley across goal as he hooked his shot from Walker's throw-in. When Newcastle did attack, in the eighth minute, Colback's effort was blocked and as the ball ballooned up into the air, Mitrovic tried to get a header on it, but it lacked power and went straight to Hugo Lloris. This started a little spell of attacking play from the home side, with Mitrovic having a shot blocked before he was denied the chance to get on the end of a low Townsend cross at the near post by some great defending by Alderweireld.

Both sides then went through a spell of loose passing, but Newcastle looked more up for it than they have done for much of the season. Eriksen got caught dwelling on the ball by Mitrovic and the Barcodes went forward. It was when the second phase saw the ball back in the Spurs box, Wijnaldum steered the ball home from Mitrovic's set-up as he and two Spurs players went to ground. With 18 minutes played, it was not the way Spurs fans had foreseen the game going.

Play got bogged down with midfield battles without either team threatening each others' penalty areas. Spurs were not playing their fast passing game and were getting closed down quickly meaning their was little tempo about their game. This made them look lacklustre and with half an hour gone hadn't caused the Newcastle keeper to make a save. Lloris had to pluck one out of the air, but Walker had taken the sting out of Mitrovic's shot and in the 33rd minute, Alderweireld had the first Tottenham effort on target with a long shot straight at the goalkeeper.

It didn't come as much of a surprise when Sissoko crossed and Mitrovic powered a header past Lloris, as then, third place was what we seemed to be settling for. Even though Eriksen was played in on the right by Walker and his shot from a narrow angle was on target, Darlow beat it out at his near post.

Without Alli and Dembele, Spurs were struggling to have any sort of impact on the game. They allowed Newcastle to dictate the game and could not prevent them scoring twice. At half-time, the odds on getting anything out of the game were very long. It was as poor a 45 minutes as Spurs had put in all season.

At the start of the second half, I had hoped for some reaction form the Spurs team. Yes, it had been a long, hard season, but this was the last game for a few weeks for most of them and it was a continuation of the poor performances that they had put in since going two up at Chelsea.

It wasn't so much that Newcastle were closing down Spurs that quickly, it was more our movement was poor and their intent very slow. Bringing on Onomah and Carroll for Son and Mason was supposed to make a difference, but the early signs were that the substitutes were making little difference. When Spurs went forward, Kane had to drop deep to get the ball and when they did find space wide, the crossing was pretty awful.

When they did show a bit of urgency, the ball was worked down the left and played inside to Eriksen, who laid it into Dier's path. His shot took a deflection for a corner, but they were beseeching the referee for a penalty. But all they got was a corner and nothing came from that. It did spark a little more pace and Tiote brought down Kane from behind about 22 yards out, giving Eriksen the chance to test Darlow, but it didn't get past the wall.

Eriksen opened the Newcastle defence, with a pass inside Janmaat to free Davies on the left, but Erik Lamela couldn't get enough on the low ball in as Colback was in close attendance. The Argentine did better on the hour when he was played in on a Spurs break by Dier and from a very narrow angle on the left, his drive beat Darlow at the keeper's near post to pull a goal back. Eriksen has started the move with Kane and the Dane was finding a bit more space to play in and was starting to pull the strings.

Lamela then blotted his copy-book a bit with a foul on Townsend that brought a booking. He was also involved in setting up Onomah for a shot from the right, but Darlow was behind it. The move had started with a header won in midfield and the ball quickly moved forward. This was what was catching Newcastle out now.

Goalscorer Mitrovic had been involved in a couple of incidents before he went over the top of the ball on Kyle Walker and he received treatment for a perceived injury while referee Anthony Taylor waited until he got up and then produced the red card quite rightly, compared to the view of the home fans who applauded him off. He will miss three games at the start of the Championship season with his ban.

The dismissal spurred us into action and there was suddenly a spring in the step of the players and the fans, as they sang loudly over the boos of the home fans who were getting at Walker for getting his leg nearly broken. Eriksen tried to curl one in over Darlow, but it went over the bar.

Just when Spurs were in the ascendency, Sissoko broke from the back and into the Spurs penalty area and went down as Eriksen and Vertonghen closed in. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, but replays showed that the Newcastle midfielder dived and at 3-1, there was no way back with Wijnaldum tucking the ball away.

Carroll hit a shot across goal and Harry Kane was only a foot away from getting a head on it, but with Alderweireld losing the ball ten yards into the Newcastle half, it was worked to Sissoko, who stood up this time and hit a shot that Lloris pushed over the bar. Caught on the break again, Townsend ran half the pitch, but did what he normally does and came in from the right to hit a shot that Lloris smothered. Then Sissoko went close with a shot from the edge of the box, curling it wide and then when the midfielder broke from a Spurs corner, Hugo had to save when he was one on one with Sissoko and from the corner Townsend hit the bar before Aarons turned the ball in at the far post when it came back in, with the defence sleeping. Then, a minute later, another break gave Janmaat the chance to make it five from the right, with a low shot across Lloris. By then, the Spurs players didn't seem to be there mentally.

Kane had a late chance, taking Chadli's ball down, coming inside from the right and shooting wide of the near post. He didn't really have much of a sniff today, but the midfield should really be looking at themselves as they rarely created much for him or the other midfielders who sometimes got up alongside him.

This was the most goals we have conceded in a game all season and performing in a way that was embarrassing. Having played well all season until the last few matches, we looked appalling against a side who have been shamed by most teams in the Premier League this season. Our record of the best defence was torn apart and why they didn't stick to the plan they have put into practice all season I s hard to understand. We hadn't been beaten by a large margin all season, but to lose to Newcastle who have struggled for goals exposed Spurs end of season form and we probably didn't deserve to end up second.

Like the start of the season, Spurs took too long to get going in this match against a side already relegated and although they were up for it, the Magpies have been poor all season. If we had played anywhere near our best we would have got something out of this match. We seem to struggle often against ten men and this match was no different. Losing three goals to a side with a man sent off is poor in any match. We didn't use the ball quickly enough when we had a man advantage and the substitution of Chadli for Walker seemed to unbalance the side. With three at the back, the midfield looked all over the place and by going all out on attack, they left themselves open at the back time and time again.

From Newcastle's point of view, their fans should perhaps be asking why they haven't played like this before now. Their relegation might be something they see as the sign of a good season ahead, but how many of their players will stay, will the manager stay and do they realise how hard it is to get out of the Championship. They should be favourites, but Benitez has no experience of the lower league and neither have many of their players.
