Match report

This was the archetypal game of two seven minutes. 0-2 down in the first seven minutes of the first half, by the time the second half had reached the same stage, Tottenham found themselves 4-2 ahead of Burnley and on their way to the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Pochettino had made seven changes and the inclusion of some of the players raised an eyebrow. Chiriches, Kaboul and Paulinho are all supposed to be on their way out of the club, but started in the side that were hit by a really early goal by Burnley. It was a straight ball through the middle that caught out Kaboul and left Vertonghen trying to get to Marvin Sordell, who struck the ball left footed, first time and it flew past Michel Vorm's right and put the Clarets ahead with two minutes on the clock.

If that wasn't bad enough, Stambouli's foul on Jones in a central position about 30 yards out gave Burnley's Ross Wallace a chance to drill a free-kick at Tottenham's goal. It didn't look like causing too much trouble until it hit the jumping Soldado and deflected wickedly past Vorm to double the lead.

It seemed a long time at the match, but Spurs were back in the game within a couple of minutes. Townsend jinked up the right wing and dinked a cross into the near post. There he found Roberto Soldado's head, flicking it on to the middle of the six yard box and Paulinho had time to chest the ball down and volley it home from close range past Heaton in the Burnley goal. At 2-1, things didn't seem as bad, but I thought that Burnley would make things difficult for us having taken the lead.

Trippier did well to block Rose's drive after Townsend's cross found him on the far side of the box and then Stambouli drove high over the top from a clearance from a corner. The same player pulled another shot wide, when Duff prevented Soldado reaching Andros' cross, but Benjamin couldn't get his shot on target. Burnley threatened only once more in the half, when Kightly headed Sordell's cross wide as he stretched to meet it. For Tottenham, Townsend shot over from outside the box before Paulinho put a corner low into the box, which caused confusion and Stambouli drove a shot in, which was blocked to Kaboul, who hit what looked like a weak back-pass towards goal. The ball came back to him and his second bite was a bit better, but missed the goal by a couple of feet to the right as he looked at it.

Townsend was enjoying himself on the wing and his low ball in from the right beat everyone to reach the far post, where Soldado met it but his shot hit the bar from just a few yards out. While he might not be scoring, I don't think he is the worst player to wear a Spurs shirt, but he is one of the unluckiest. As it was, his miss counted for little, as a minute later Tottenham were level. Davies did well getting to the dead ball line on the left and pulling the ball back towards the edge of the area for Paulinho. The ball was a little high to set the Brazilian up for a shot, so he left it and Etienne Capoue strode onto it and fired a low shot into the net from 20 yards out.

It was a relief to be on equal terms as the match ticked into added time at the end of the first half, but the prospect of extra time and penalties loomed large if Spurs didn't finish it off in the second half.

Gary Mabbutt's half-time appearance brought back memories of FA Cup glories of the past, but of more importance was trying to ensure Spurs started the second half well. And they did just that.

Within two minutes, they were ahead. The Tottenham attacks had seen three crosses into the box which caused problems, with the third being put out for a corner. Paulinho hit the corner to the far post, where Vlad Chiriches bundled it home right on the line. His cupped ear celebration was an odd one, as it indicated that he has a problem with the home fans.

Burnley struck straight back, with Kightly hitting a low shot from an angle, but Vorm saved to his right and then Spurs went up the other end and scored once more. Playing the ball out from the back, it went up the left wing from where Stambouli swept the ball wide right to Soldado and his run took him to the dead ball line and he put in a low cross that flashed across the goal and Danny Rose, playing at left midfield, made a run through the middle of two defenders to score from five yards out.

It was a fine flowing move and one in which the ball was moved quickly to stretch Burnley, creating the space to do damage. It is an example of Spurs at their best and the way they could play such expansive and incisive football. And it continued, with Chiriches making good ground down the right to the dead ball line and his low cross was hit firmly across the face of goal, with nobody there to touch it home. Soldado tested the keeper when he turned Marney and hit a shot straight at him, then Kaboul was denied on the line by Heaton's low stop.

There was time for Josh Onomah to have fifteen minutes to get some first team experience on his debut, coming on for Townsend. He showed good confidence on the ball and a keenness to get involved by making himself available to receive a pass.  Dier replaced Chiriches before Capoue tried to replicate his goal, but his 25 yard shot swerved away from goal and ended up nearer the corner flag !!  There was almost another goal when Stambouli broke forward and put the ball across the edge of the six yard box, with Keane almost knocking it past his own keeper, but Heaton responded well to keep it out.  The keeper was in action again, when a ball was played into Soldado's feet just inside the box and he turned on it to shoot at goal, but the keeper was behind it.  From 30 yards out, substitute Nacer Chadli tried to do a Harry Kane free-kick, which dipped after it passed the wall, but it was a yard off target.

Spurs played out added time and increased their share of the possession in the match (ending up with 60%) in a game which initially had not looked like having this outcome.  But it was not all plain sailing for Spurs and there is obviously some enmity between Kaboul and Vertonghen, as they had a very public slanging match after one Burnley break, as they were both unhappy with each other.  Maybe the cause of that is Kaboul's exclusion from the side, with a transfer window departure heavily hinted at in the media.  But away from that, there were some good performances from Townsend, Paulinho and Stambouli and although Capoue looks the most relaxed footballer in the world, he did well tonight.  Rose's deployment in midfield might have been prompted by his goal against Chelsea and he did well there, but that might be expected as he started out as a winger.

Sleepy at the start, but once they got their football going, Spurs made short work of Burnley, in this repeat of the 1962 FA Cup final and move on to a home tie against Leicester City and a repeat of the 1961 FA Cup final.  A similar outcome would be well received, but with Wolverhampton Wanderers, QPR, Nottingham Forest and Coventry City as our other FA Cup final opponents already out of the competition, I guess if we get through the Fourth Round, it will be Chelsea or Sheffield United if they both survive.
