Match report

A draw in this Premier League matter was not perhaps a just reward for Spurs having the better of the match and Arsenal only coming on strong towards the end.

With a familiar Premier League eleven taking to the field, Spurs started with a good tempo, but tried to over-play on the edge of the Arsenal box, when first Dembele laid the ball off to Eriksen, with two men on him and then Lamela dragged the ball back to open up space and tried to play in Harry Kane, but he was not looking in the direction the pass was coming from.

Arsenal were slightly quicker into the tackle in the first ten minutes, with the Spurs defence unable to clear the ball from their third for any period of time. When Arsenal won a corner, they packed men around Lloris, in an attempt to play Chelsea style. They were also willing to play long to Giroud, but he was well marshalled by Vertonghen.

When Spurs looked long, Alderweield's pass to Eriksen on the edge of the box beat Mertesacker, but hit the Dane's heels and went behind him. The ball wasn't sticking with a Spurs player in midfield when the ball came out, but Arsenal could not make the most of the possession they were getting.

Dembele took the responsibility to shoot, but it came off a defender for a corner, which was worked short for Eriksen to curl the ball in, but it wasn't close enough to be a shot not far out enough to be a cross for the white shirts in the box. So, the first 20 minutes went by in a flash.

Giroud claimed that a Spurs man took a dive when he fouled him, which was rich after Cazorla had just gone to ground when pressurised in his own last third, as he knew he would lose the ball. Even Ozil couldn't believe it when he tripped Kane. From it, Eriksen curled the ball in and Dier got on the end of it at the far post, but put his header wide, when it might have been better headed across goal.

Good closing down saw Lamela go through, but he was shrugged off the ball on the edge of the home area, but then it turned into a war of attrition in midfield, with both sides turning the ball over. When Dembele got the ball and played it to Vertonghen, he moved it left to Rose on halfway. His ball down the left hand channel saw Kosielny trying to step up and catch him offside, but Kane ran onto the ball and had a long time as Cech waited for him, but he calmly stroked the ball over the keeper, firing the ball into the turf to beat the keeper's early dive.

Giroud once more showed that he wasn't slow to hit the ground when he was bumping and pulling Vertonghen and then barged into Jan, knocking him over. While the game was going on, Alli broke on the right, was fouled, but Atkinson played on and Dele chose to try and flick Kane through on the right, when a simpler ball left to Lamela might have put him in on goal. Gooners got all excited when Campbell put the ball in and Sanchez was on the six yard line and tried to drag the ball in, but he didn't do that and was offside to boot.  Spurs hassled Arsenal on the ball Eriksen played Kane in at a narrow angle on the right and he forced Cech to beat away his drive.

Arsenal's change at half time brought Flamini on for Cazorla, so you can guess what their tactics were going to be. A couple of minutes in, Campbell got away on the right came inside and tried to curl a shot past Lloris, but the Spurs keeper got down well to it and got a good hand on it to push it out of the danger zone. It is incredible that supposedly strong men like Mertesacker goes down like a sack of merde when Alli brushed him.

Eriksen had the ball on the right wing in the 52nd minute and played it short to Kane, who let him take it on, inside and into the box. Hitting an angled drive, Flamini dived in and deflected the effort over Cech's dive, but the ball flew agonisingly just wide of the far post. Two minutes later, Dembele's foul on Campbell got a free kick on the right that was floated in and Giroud won the header, but with Lloris stuck on his line, it hit the bar and went over when he should have scored. Play was swinging Arsenal's way with Atkinson giving them a string of free-kicks. Surprisingly he didn't give one when Kane slid in on Cech and the keeper was outside his box and only just got out of trouble with his feet.

Another free header from another free kick saw Kosielny head wide, with Spurs not dealing well with aerial balls into their box. A corner on the Arsenal right was punched away as Lloris came for it this time. It brought another one from the same side and a free header again for Giroud saw him head inches wide from the six yard line. Spurs were being hassled out of possession now and free-kick after free-kick was given to the home team with Tottenham not able to hold onto the ball.

When Spurs did close Arsenal down on the left hand corner of their own box, it was played wide right ot Walker, who cut it back for Eriksen to hit first time and Cech dived to save, with the ball coming out to Alli, who put it over. In the next attack, Dier found Kane and he pulled his shot wide across goal, when he should have made Cech work. Lamela was played away down the left, winning a corner, but it produced nothing. A free kick brought a corner and then another, which was worked to the edge of the box, but Alli's touch took the ball away from him and only a Walker tackle prevented Arsenal breaking away.

Spurs seemed to have got their second wind, as Arsenal were finding it hard to keep up with the white shirts as they went forward. Winning a corner, it was played to the near post and Alderweireld's header brought a good save from Cech. Arsenal players could not win the ball and when they did, Spurs players were sharper to win it back straight away, an example when Kane was put in on goal after Arsenal players were shrugged off the ball too easily. Unfortunately for Spurs, Harry put it wide with an early shot that had Cech scrambling.

Pochettino brought on Son for Lamela, with Erik looking like he might pick up a second yellow card with his tackling. Arsenal then had a spell where they were picking up the ball in midfield and a ball in from their right saw substitute Gibbs come in behind Walker to scramble a volley past Lloris at the post to level the score.

Momentum was going with the home side and a long free kick to the far post fell to Mertesacker to hook at goal and Lloris had to scramble it wide for a corner, from which Giroud hit a fierce volley, but it went over the top. Spurs brought on Mason for Alli, who looked worn out, as it would add fresh legs to the defensive two.

Tottenham just couldn't hang onto the ball and it was putting pressure on the back four. Lloris came and punched a corner away, but when it came back in Giroud couldn't beat Hugo's dive with his header. Tottenham were clearing the ball anywhere and it kept coming back. The last fifteen minutes were draining and Spurs were really hanging on, with only a Kane shot when slipped through to show for some possession, but it went wide.

Josh Onomah replaced Eriksen as 90 minutes were up and while both teams huffed and puffed and Giroud moaned, nothing approached the goal and it petered out into a 1-1 draw with Spurs having the best of three-quarters of the match, but Arsenal coming strong, as you would have expected, towards the end of the second half. .

Arsene Wenger's double teapot came out regularly in the second half and he was at his whingeing best. Rattled, he certainly was and while his side salvaged a draw, they were second best all over the pitch for most of the game. Certainly, the future at Spurs appears better and denying them the chance to go top was satisfying, although a win would have been even better.

As it was, our unbeaten run continues and lasts for another two weeks, with international week ahead. We come back with a match at home to West Ham, when a similar performance will be needed to ensure they do not get anything from their visit to the Lane.
