PREVIEW |
This has been a season of transition for West Ham United London.
A new name and a new stadium, as well as lots of average new players
have conspired to progress the Irons from a promising aspiring
second tier Premier League team to one looking for the point they
need to mathematically avoid relegation. The recruitment in the summer had been less than impressive and when Payet threw a strop, it left West Ham without their creative drive. The head of Antonio has been more effective than that of Carroll, who has played fewer and fewer games, when it comes to scoring and while there may be promising young talent in the squad, the realisation that it has to come to fruition is hitting hard. Ravel Morrison, Reece Oxford, Savio Nsereko, Joey Beauchamp, Kevin Nolan. The list is endless. So what have they got to rely on ? The pride and passion of Mark Noble, who said the match against Swansea City recently was the biggest for the club in years. Ambition ? No wonder fans were getting at the very epitome of the Irons earlier in the season. While the number of players that arrived in the summer was impressive, the level of quality could not said to be quite as good. Players from abroad don't always equal top quality and while the Irons are not shopping at the top table yet, Karen Brady would have you thinking that they should be. Unfortunately, the table tells a different story. Inconsistency has been the only consistent thing about their season and wins over the likes of Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Swansea City, Hull City, Middlesbrough and Burnley have kept them afloat with a victory over Southampton the highest placed side they have overcome. With Carroll likely to be press-ganged into action they will be up for this game, as their season will be salvaged with a win over Spurs. Friday night is no night for
football. I hope Spurs can adapt to this oddly timed fixture
and that they won't leave it as late as the home match against West
Ham United London. Unless the home side fail to turn up, it
will be a closer game than the relative positions might suggest. |

Match report Spurs lost 0-1 to West Ham United London in a game that has been heralded as the greatest ever seen at the Olympic Stadium, Stratford by Irons fans across large areas of East London.
It was a match with little
excitement other than among the home fans, who appeared to be happy
that bubbles they blow fade and die like their dreams. It
shows a clear lack of ambition at that club. Levi Barrington |

FACT*
West Ham United have
rivalries against Millwall, Spurs and Chelsea, but it is little
known that their biggest and most natural rivalry is against soon to
be non-league Leyton Orient. |

After last season, if I was you I would get your money on West Ham
to win the Premier League next season. It seems like when
clubs realise they can raise their game for one match a season
against us, it suddenly clicks that they might be able to do it
against other sides. Look at some of our other results this season. 0-0 at Bournemouth, who then go to Middlesbrough and lose. Crystal Palace make us work hard for the 1-0 win at Selhurst, then lost 0-5 away at Man City. Leicester home 1-1, followed by a 2-1 defeat by WBA for the Foxes. It will be interesting to
see if the Irons put up as much of a fight against Liverpool in
their next match. |
