With the tempting offer of top spot should Spurs beat West Ham United in their last meeting at Upton Park, an early goal for the home side settled the match, in which Spurs failed to reproduce their form of recent weeks.

The early exchanges saw a Payet free-kick swung in but punched out by Hugo Lloris, then Eriksen put in a right wing cross for Chadli, but he was beaten to it by a good defensive header.  But a corner won by Lanzini chasing down a loose header ended up with Payet's delivery being headed in powerfully at the near post by Antonio, who beat Chadli to the ball.  It's not like Spurs to keep a clean sheet, but they needed to quell the home crowd by keeping it tight for a while.

Spurs looked for a quick response, but Davies' shot couldn't be directed in towards the goal and then Chadli was almost released by Lamela, but his touch took the ball away from him.   Lamela took a clump in the back of the head from Cresswell, which drew blood and required the Argentine to leave the pitch to get the flow staunched.  While he was out of action, Noble was set up by Payet and the ball moved on its way to the save from Hugo, who watched it all the way. 

West Ham had set up to stop the full backs pushing on, so a lot of the Spurs play had to come inside, where there were a number of claret and blue shirts congesting the space.  When Tottenham looked to open up the home defence, their passing was a bit heavy and the wet pitch might not have aided the weight on the pass.  The game became a little tetchy, with a number of fouls being given, as the ref handed a yellow card for one on Payet by Alderweireld.  Nothing came from the French midfielder's free-kick, but when he broke later in the half, he played it square to Noble, whose shot was blocked and then Kouyate had the same result when he tried a follow-up shot.

While Spurs were finding it hard to break through the defensive set up of the Irons, the home crowd were subdued and despite being in front, the atmosphere was a little flat.  With Payet's balls in from corners, there were a lot being played for, but the referee was giving them more free-kicks than anything else.  Marriner was not exactly being even-handed with the fouls he was giving.  When Payet got in space on the edge of the box, he decided to have a shot himself and it came off Toby, with Lloris going the other way and luckily for Tottenham, the ball went off for a corner as it spun wide of the post.  From the set-piece, it was played back to Noble, who played it back into the box, where Antonio shot into the net after Emineke's shot had been saved, but they had both been offside.

In the last minute of added time, Lamela's cross from the left wing was headed on by Collins, as Adrian flew out behind him, but it managed to go over everyone behind him and did not cause the home team a problem in the end.

Tottenham hadn't got their game going in the first half and looked off the pace.  The closing down had been good, but their had been little movement to make space up top and the passing was loose. 

The second half started with Ogbonna limping from Mason's tackle at the end of the first half, then Spurs managed their first shot of the match with Davies drive wide of the right post from just left of centre.  Some close work on the right wing eventually got a yard for Trippier to cross the ball and Lamela dived in to head it, but was well wide, as he was too far ahead of the near post.  Cresswell got to a Payet cross ahead of Trippier, but his downward header bounced over the bar, then Obiang fired a shot too high, as West Ham kept pressing forward.

On the hour, Alderweireld hit a raking shot that bounced in front of the keeper, who saved, then managed to get a touch to divert Harry Kane's follow up wide when the Spurs striker looked offside and Kouyate got a touch to put Kane off.  Dele Alli came on for Nacer Chadli as Pochettino looked to spice the side up a bit.  Toby tried another effort, but this was off target.  Eriksen fired a shot in from a tight angle on the right, forcing Adrian to beat it out, then the home crowd were calling for a red card as Wimmer brought Emineke down, but the Nigerian had already pulled Kevin back. 

Antonio failed to repeat his goal effort when he got on the end of a Payet free-kick without a white shirt near him, but he put it over the crossbar.  Alli had added some impetus to the Tottenham attack, but Son's introduction saw him have a hopeful shot that went over.  The same happened to Creswell's after Alderweireld's header went up in the air and the West Ham full back volleyed it at goal, but too high.

Spurs hadn't really been at it tonight, with West Ham more determined and fired up for the game, which is something we will have to get used to.  The majority  of the last 20 minutes was a war of attrition in the middle of the pitch, with few chances on goal.  West Ham tried to run the clock down, but the best chance came forma  Spurs corner, which bounced across the goal and Adrian had to punch clear as two Spurs players converged on the ball at the far post.  Payet almost broke away, but when he got to the Spurs box, he was outnumbered.

Going into injury time, the game was up, as West Ham played for throw-ins and kept numbers back to prevent a breakaway.  Spurs couldn't get hold of the ball enough to create anything, as the game became bogged down in midfield tackles.  The ball pin-balled around, control and passing were lacking in quality, as Spurs looked long and that wasn't going to work. 

The results elsewhere had gone Tottenham's way with Arsenal losing to Swansea and Liverpool beating Manchester City.  Having started without Alli and Dembele, it was to be a test of the squad depth, but more so, it became a test of how they could battle back.  Having done so many times before this season, this early setback was one too many for Tottenham and despite having a lot of possession, there looked a lack of cutting edge about the side tonight.  Adrian had to make a couple of saves, but where were the 34 shots from Sunday ?  I know it is different opposition and a different situation, but going forward we looked weak tonight.  It was the home team's big game and not ours, as Jermaine Jenas had spoken about earlier.  But now, the rest of this season are all big games for us.

With sides knowing the tough programme we have over the next few weeks, they will be looking to get at us, as West Ham did ... closing us down at the back and making us turn over possession too easily.  As with all the bad results we have had this season (and there haven't been that many), we need to get back on a good run.   While Arsenal are on a poor run of form in the league at the moment, you can bet they will be up for it on Saturday.  We need to be too and not to let them get an advantage in the game, like we allowed the Irons tonight.

An unhappy birthday for Pochettino and Alderweireld, but hopefully, that feeling may lead to happy days ahead.
