| 1.11.1972 | There was an air of tension
that surrounded this first meeting of the two clubs for five years in
the heyday of hooliganism. Millwall fans tried to infiltrate
the home crowd for this League Cup 4th Round, but a massive police
presence stayed any violence that may have occurred in the ground.
Tottenham had qualified for this round just two days earlier, with a second replay win over Middlesbrough in extra time, so it was a fresher Millwall side that took the field. However, Spurs were obviously suffering few ill effects from the previous match and took the game to the Second Division opposition, with Martin Peters heading home a Knowles cross and Alan Gilzean's left wing cross was hammered home by Steve Perryman to give Tottenham a 2-0 lead. Millwall were unable to push Spurs back and despite having the bulk of the opportunities in the match, Tottenham had to settle for the two goal margin to take them through to the 5th round. Teams : |
