Spurs scored a second training ground friendly win with a 4-2 score-line against C.D. Denia.  Played in the evening to combat the searing heat, Tottenham rotated players to give them on pitch time, but they put the Third Division team to the sword with some good finishing.

Spurs almost went behind in the 20th minute, when Michael Dawson was forced to head out a shot that was going in under the bar, but the possession statistics were in Tottenham's favour and on the half hour, Heurelho Gomes threw the ball to Jermaine Jenas, who ran with the ball before releasing Aaron Lennon wide on the right wing.  The winger's low bal into the area was controlled by Adel Taarabt and after turning his marker, he shot past the exposed keeper to give Tottenham the lead.

Eight minutes later, Jenas played 1-2s with Taarabt and Darren Bent to put him into the clear and he slotted home after rounding the goalie in the 39th minute.  However, right on half-time, Denia got a goal back with a volley through a crowd of players to make it 2-1 at the break.

Nine minutes after the re-start Spurs had extended the lead once more, with Andros Townsend making good ground on the left wing, before his ball into the danger area was turned past the Denia goalkeeper by one of his own players.  Five minutes later it was 4-1, with Taarabt putting Giovani Dos Santos through with a well-timed run and as the Mexican went into the area and was closed down by the goalie, he squared the ball for Darren Bent to put into an empty net.

With 20 minutes to go, Denia pulled another goal back with a fierce free-kick that flew in to make the final score 4-2.

14.07.2008 Tottenham played a friendly match at their training camp against Spanish side Tavernes, who play their football in the Regional Leagues.

Fielding two different sides in the two halves of the game, Tottenham eased themselves back into competitive football with a sparkling second half after turning around with a 1-0 lead.

New signing John Bostock put in a cross for Aaron Lennon to head home for the first Tottenham goal of the season on 28 minutes.  Chances had been carved out before the goal, with Darren Bent nodding wide after he had hit the post with another effort, while Jermaine Jenas forced the keeper to a save and Benoit Assou-Ekotto hit a shot that dipped just over the crossbar.

The second half team took the task in hand and re-opened the scoring just after the interval with Tomas Pekhart firing in from the edge of the box into the top corner.  Giovani Dos Santos opened his account for Tottenham with a neat near post finish in the 54th minute after a good pass from Huddlestone, with Pekhart adding his second ten minutes later when he swept home Berbatov's low cross after good work from Hutton.

Seizing on poor defending from Tavernes, Dos Santos hit his second goal from close range in the 69th minute and Steed Malbranque got in on the act when set up by a 77th minute pass from Pekhart.  With five minutes remaining, Andros Townsend fed Jamie O'Hara to burst into a good position past two defenders and he finished from the centre of the area for the seventh Spurs goal and the midfielder then finished off the scoring with a 20 yard curling shot ending a period of possession just a minute later.

28.07.2007 The final of the Vodacom Challenge pitched Spurs against Orlando Pirates under the hot afternoon sun in the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria.

The first chance of the game fell to Lekgwathi, who took a back-heel and fired well over from the right side of the six yard box.  30 seconds later, a Darren Bent drive forced Chansa into a diving save and from the corner, the ball bobbled about, coming off Tom Huddlestone to drop for Bent to volley home off the underside of the bar.  Chimbonda had an opportunity soon after from a corner, but he put his far post header just over the top and another when he exchanged passes with Dimitar Berbatov and smashed a 20 yard effort just wide of the angle.

Defender Makita was tracked by Bent into his own area and as he tried to juggle the ball on the dead-ball line, he lost possession and tight to the line, the new Spurs forward pulled the ball back for Berbatov to stretch and stroke the ball home from inside the six yard box.  Tottenham were in complete control and Huddlestone played in Bent who crashed a shot against the post.

On 21 minutes, it was 3-0, as Berbatov received a throw-in and threaded a pass through the defence to Adel Taarabt and his back-heel into the path of Bent saw the front man take a touch to open up a gap between defender and keeper to slide the ball home.  Straight away Bent was presented with another chance by Malbranque, but the narrow angle saw his lob over the advancing keeper go across the face of goal.

When the Pirates broke on goal, they either shot waywardly wide or hit weak shots on goal, but Dawson and Rocha were there to block any shots on goal.  It took until the 58th minute for Robinson to make a diving save from substitute Merache's shot and Berbatov replied with a free-kick that Chansa saved, while Makita almost touched a Malbranque cross into his own goal.  The game petered out as more substitutions were made and Tottenham became the first team to take the trophy out of Africa with this victory.

24.07.2007 A repeat result for Spurs against Orlando Pirates in Cape Town saw them reach the final of the Vodacom Challenge.

Although the Pirates had the early initiative it was Tottenham who took a 12th minute lead, when Tom Huddlestone's 50 yard pass released Darren Bent to lobe the ball over the advancing Francis Chansa from the edge of the area.  Cerny had to be sharp down to a Josephy Kamwendo effort, while  he out-guessed Lebohang Mokoena in a one-on-one, with the Pirate slicing the rebound well wide.  The ref was generously awarding free-kicks to the home side, but Lucky Lekgwathi and Ralph Matema excitedly fired well off target.

A Wayne Routledge cross evaded the keeper, but was also out of Bent's reach, while, on the half hour, Younes Kaboul smashed a 30 yard free-kick that rebounded off the post and then Defoe tested the keeper with a 20 yard dipping effort.  Adel Taarabt was next to test the goalie and at the other end Cerny fell easily on a curling shot from Matema.  As the half came to a close, Bent set up Huddlestone, but his shot was fluffed and then the new signing nodded down for Jermain Defoe, but Chansa was out on to his shot to smother it.

The second half started with Mokoena and Makhanya linking well, but failing to get an effort on goal, with Spurs reduced to long range shooting, as Hud brought a good save from the keeper and captain Jermaine Jenas hit a long shot that was easily saved.  Joseph Makhanya forced Cerny to tip over a fierce free-kick with 57 minutes gone, although as the play progressed, Huddlestone released Bent once more and his prodded effort past Chansa was cleared off the line by Destin Makita.

Matema and substitute Ramudzuli had openings which they failed to test Cerny with, as Tottenham responded with a Taarabt curler that went inches wide.  As substitutions were made, Bennet Chenene and Lekgwathi hit Cerny with shots, with the best chance falling to Ramudzuli, who volleyed over from 12 yards out with the goal gaping.  Another opportunity in the 83rd minute saw Kamwendo drive a free-kick goalwards, which Cerny did well to keep out.  Just when it looked like Tottenham might concede an equaliser, O'Hara and Defoe linked well to put Malbranque away and his cross was knocked home by Wayne Routledge from 15 yards out.

That should have been it, but having picked up bookings for Kaboul (foul) and Stalteri (dissent), a penalty was awarded to Orlando for a foul on Walaza by Chimbonda.  Cerny dived to stop the spot-kick from the player who was fouled, but it was ordered to be retaken as he had moved.  The Spurs keeper then dived to the left to stop the second penalty, but once more he was ruled to have gone too early, so with the third kick, it was left to Kamwendo beat the Czech to set up a grandstand last five minutes, plus four minutes added time.  Spurs kept the Pirates at bay and although a scramble from a corner looked as though it might cause problems, the ball was cleared and Spurs had the win.

21.07.2007  Spurs won out 2-1 in this first game of the Vodacom Challenge, thanks to our strikers sharpness.

The weather was cool in the South African winter in Durban, with the ABSA Stadium crowd excitable when Kaiser Chiefs had the ball.

Younes Kaboul only lasted five minutes before a boot in the face from Shaun Bartlett meant he could not carry on and Anthony Gardner came on to partner Michael Dawson.   It took 15 minutes for the first shot on goal, but Mabhuti Khanyeza's effort flew well wide.  The Chiefs had the bulk of the play, but when Tottenham did break away, it seemed it was always Robbie Keane who was hauled back by an offside flag.  His dissent about the decisions (not all of which looked correct) got him a booking from the ref.

Michael Dawson put in a good block to keep out another Khanyeza shot and then, seven minutes before the interval, Tottenham's first opening saw Keane's left wing cross headed wide by Dimitar Berbatov.  But a minute later Keane seized his moment as the Chiefs' defence waited for an offside flag once more and the Irishman deftly lobbed the keeper Emile Baron as he came out to finish Ricardo Rocha's through ball.

Five minutes after the restart, the Chiefs' levelled with Onismor Bhasera racing up the left wing to play in a cross that found Bartlett stealing in front of Robinson and Gardner.  This Caused a massive reaction from the home crowd.  Robbo was soon in action again, with a tip over the bar as Bhasera's cross looked as if it might drift in, but as the clock passed the hour mark, substitute Darren Bent raced clear of his marker down the left side and unselfishly squared the ball to Berbatov, who knocked the ball into and unguarded net.

Tottenham looked fairly comfortable although the Kaiser Chiefs did threaten, although there efforts did not trouble the goal and Tottenham took a win forward to their next game against Orlando Pirates.

05.08.1998 Spurs travelled to Holland and took on EV & AC De Tubanters at the Sportpark Het Diekman in a pre-season friendly.

Twenty minutes in, Andy Sinton scored the opening goal with a shot from the edge of the area and the lead was doubled when Les Ferdinand, the provider for the first, scored two minutes after, heading home Stephen Carr's cross from 12 yards out.

Nicola Berti got a third in the 52nd minute when he got to a near post ball to nudge it home, then Chris Armstrong made it 4-0 on 69 minutes with a far post header, with Rory Allen's 70th minute goal putting Spurs out of reach after Armstrong's pass set him up for a shot.

The home side grabbed a goal on 74 minutes, when Boy Jhan Jhan beat the Spurs defence, but the match finished 6-1 when Colin Calderwood netted the final Tottenham goal with five minutes left of the match, heading home at the far post.
