25.09.1968 A League Cup Third Round tie at White Hart Lane was the first meeting between the two sides, which ended in a big win for Tottenham.

With future manager David Pleat in the Grecians side, Spurs were expected to take this tie easily against the side from the Fourth Division, but there was continued resistance from the underdogs in Tottenham's first game in the competition.

In fact, Exeter took the lead early on through John Mitten, but Jimmy Greaves equaliser came shortly after, although the visitors soon took the lead again, when Alan Banks seized on Pat Jennings' parry from Pleat's shot to make the score 2-1.  By half-time, Tottenham were ahead thanks to goals from another future manager, Terry Venables and another from Greaves.  Jimmy's goal was sublime.  Receiving the ball from Alan Gilzean, he swerved past player-manager centre half John Newman.  With an electric turn of pace, he sped through the Exeter defence and passed the ball unerringly into the corner of the net.

Into the second half, Spurs stepped up a gear with Jimmy Pearce scoring his first and second goals in a Spurs shirt, while Exeter still refused to lay down and made it 5-3 through another Banks goal.  However,
good work by Cliff Jones and Alan Mullery provided Jimmy Greaves with the chance to score another hat-trick, which he took gratefully, leaving Spurs 6-3 winners.
